End Cash Bail In New York

In American jails today 6 in 10 people have not been convicted of their charges. Most are there because they can not afford cash bail and New York has an especially horrible record that leaves many behind bars for months and years awaiting trial.

Funny, I thought the U.S. Constitution forbade the practice of detaining people for long times. What happened to the right to a speedy trial? Or the protection from unreasonable bail? Our justice system is anything but.

To make matters even worse, Sen. McConnell declared that they will not approve any more of the judges. We have a severe judge shortage and he is playing politics, as they don't want the President to approve of any of the judges that the President has appointed, some waiting a year or more for the Senate to act. So we have a backlog of trials because of that shortage of judges, some areas have been declared as critical, but the Senate Rs don't care. Get your senators to approve the judges so that justice can move the way it was intended to move.

The corruption evident in the US is, to state the obvious, due to the majority in Congress. Until we VOTE in every election, this will not change!

John Oliver had a wonderful segment exposing the problems with our bail system: http://www.inquisitr.com/2157440/on-last-week-tonight-with-john-oliver-the-bail-system-gets-exposed/#image_load

Barbara you bring up another valid point, and not only lack of Judges. In many States due to the screwed up tax code, the wealthiest not paying taxes by the many loopholes and offshore tax havens the Courts can't even hire the support Staff to the Judges and that has caused cases to backlog. Another reason that people are pushed to plead guilty just to move them along.....but ultimately that also messes up the persons life, now they must check a box when applying for jobs that they were found guilty of a crime......even if they were innocent and pleaded guilty just to finally get out of the broken justice systems clutches.
