You have to have a special permit wich can be pricey because of the insurance policy the city requires.in order to offer free food to the needy in city parks.

While I agree Bill under a Trump Administration it will not get better, however we are under an Obama Administration and this is happening today. But I do agree, we have worked up to this point.

If we push everything under the carpet or claim it is only happening under one Party we fail to truly get at the root of the problems. Too many people have been apathetic when they knew or fail to pay attention to what is going on or worse, condone the behavior. But for the apathetic what is that statement, for evil to prevail it is because good people do nothing - for the ignorant, the good people MUST let them know. We can't function with heads buried in the sand.

Dandelion... I was referring to the climate that allowed Drumpf to be elected. Those people, politicians, local laws, etc. have been around all along. Obama may be president still, but he's not a dictator (something it seems Drumpf aspires to be). Everyone always seems to think being president means total control. Hardly. Obama didn't write the laws in these cities that ban helping the homeless.

Thanks for your explanation Bill. I don't recognize this Country anymore. My husband passed away back in 2003 and he said, I think I'm getting out in time, he wasn't happy with the changes he experienced up to that point. He said the only thing I'm sad about is I'll not be around to help you and the children through all of what will be coming. He was so correct.

Wow! Talk about big government interference. Maybe they,re shaming the local do nothing government officials. Instead of taking action to feed the poor, they,re stamping out the private help. Shameful.

some of the excuses is that the homeless may become sick from improperly prepared food. Gee...if people were to become sick and die, wouldn't that be one less person for the police to annoy?
Food given out beats food in a dumpster.
Houston cops made a big deal on their website preparing food for the homeless. Yes, the very same group that forced homeless to toss presents, food, blankets (into a waste management dumpster )that were given out dec 22 by Food Not Bombs.

How very Christian of them. May they receive the adulation they deserve. The reverends, priests, pastors and rabbis can take pride in how they have lead their flocks.

So, this is a police priority? Who is the police chief, Attila the Hun? This is how Tampa spends its tax revenue? No better way to address this issue than to arrest people serving food to the homeless? Does this fit the definition of "home grown terror"? Interesting questions, no? If I were paying taxes in Tampa, I might want to have a little talk with the folks in Town Hall.

speaking of "How very Christian of them"... I was wondering where all the outrage from the national conservative Christian leaders has been about these police actions. they certainly don't mind screaming about everything else being an attack on their religion. certainly being arrested for doing what Jesus did and advocated doing warrants some protest from them. after all the Jesus they "claim" to follow would be among the first arrested if he were here today.

At first sight this seem crazy and cruel. Sadly your husband was right Dandelion. Having worked for over 20 years in a non-profit serving many with the most severe economic/social/mental health problems, and linked to other non-profits providing housing and other services for the homeless, things have changed hugely. The big word to understand now is LIABILITY. Cities do not want to be held responsible for lawsuits that might result from food poisoning, food allergies, or other possibilities linked to free food. The same goes for other services for those most in need. When the people who want to help understand this and do what they need to do to organize they will move forward in their aims. It seems unjust but it is what it is and if the goal is to help those least fortunate then we need to focus energy on the goal and whatever we need to do to achieve it..

I think that if someone is helping the poor the good Samaritan rule could come into play. If it is free and those who took the food freely obtained it, then there should be some ruling that exempts the city of any wrongdoing in these cases. If someone is found to intentionally do harm to another human, offering them food they knew is bad, then the laws are on the books to address that.

What I'd rather see is an entire system not rigged so that there are fewer homeless and hungry. That there is a basic income no one goes below, that there is enough affordable housing, that people who can work are paid a "living wage" and that the wealth of a Nation isn't funneled up to a few at the top but is more fairly spread out.

I just placed this posting on yesterday 8 Billionaires Control As Much Wealth As The Bottom Half of the Worlds Population and 6 out of the 8 are Americans. Something is very very wrong with this picture.

The right way is to guide them into compliance, help with how to prepare food correctly and how to prevent an unintended allergic reaction. The wrong way is to discourage empathy and compassion and punish good intentions.

Thoughtless knee jerk, blunt applications of authority, not only don't work, they backfire, provide no solutions and create more problems. Yes, times have changed, and that also means that the solution doesn't always come with the blunt enforcement delivered with a night stick.
