Why is there not compassion for these dogs that toil til their deaths for the underserving and heartless farmers? I cannot fathom how someone could tie up a dog without a proper shelter or food or water and walk away only to come back once and a great while to see if they are still alive or need replacement like batteries in a flash light. How does someone do something like that and never look back? How and why?

Just send this email to him aswell: dhmoskyr@otenet.gr
This is a deplorable situation! Don't just hide behind "I don't know what to do". Use your power and animal welfare laws to change this situation at once!
If you can't do that then you should not be in position of power!

Shame on you to watch those dogs suffer in this way! Are you a man or a schoolkid?

Do it now! Bea

This is so common here in Greece, these poor dogs are everywhere just chained and left, and it breaks my heart everytime I walk my dogs and walk past them. All they want is love, company and a proper life, I have tried to talk to the people who do this but there is NO reasoning with them!!!If you save one they just replace it, they use them as a tool not as a living breathing animal, who can feel just like us. This is ABUSE which is illegal under Greek Law, what a surprise that the Mayor is not implementing the law!!!
God this gets me soo angry, that is why I have started my petition, but in the name of sanity how many petitions do we need to get through to the Greek Authorities that they HAVE to apply the law, that's it!!
Every week there are letters in the Athen News from tourists, and people like me who live here, complaining about the plight of animals, the only thing is for people to boycott Greece until they learn compassion.
I have e-mailed ( I have lost track of the number of times) the Minister of Tourism and the Minister of Agriculter, and got nowhere.
Greece got fined in March 2007 for the abuses of farm animals, it hasn't made a difference the farm animals I see are still being kept in illegal conditions!!
GREECE NEEDS A HUGE WAKE UP CALL, I AM HEART SICK OF SEEING ABUSED ANIMALS EVERYWHERE AND SICK OF THE OWNERS ATTITUDES!!!!
I am going to write another letter to the Athens News about this, I write all the time (which has not gone down well with the locals here) because they fear a loss in tourism. THEY ARE THAT STUPID THEY CANNOT SEE IT IS THEIR ABUSES OF ANIMALS THAT DRIVE THE TOURISTS AWAY!!
I could go on forever about this, but believe me GREECE is the CHINA of Europe, I have been to the Mayor of the town where I live with video evidence of abuse, (a horse tethered to a tree in a serious state of distress, head shaking) because he lived like that all the time. He couldn't understand what the problem was, so as soon as I said the tourists were unhappy about it he had the horse moved. Where to I don't know, and the owner of it is scum of the earth who had sex with a donkey 'for a laugh' with an audience!!! Yes this is Greece, the real Greece and it is bloody and barbaric!!!

There is no excuse for this cruelty. What is happening to the hearts of people around the world? Go to church on Sunday, then cruelly treat animals all the other times?

Noted and signed. This is absolutely appalling! Shame on anyone who can treat dogs like this. Dogs are such loyal, loving creatures whose only job should be as pets of caring and compassionate people. What is wrong with that wimpy excuse of a mayor? There are plenty of things he can do; outlaw the practice then fine and jail those who continue to perpetrate these unspeakably horrendous and cruel acts. Boycott tourism to Greece until the Greeks clean up their act!

Another thing the mayor could do would be to boycott all produce that comes from the offending farmers. Most times, it is only the hip pocket nerve that listens to reason. Cruelty, thy name is man!

Cristina, I had a thought that the people who took the photo may have some video they could post on YouTube or somewhere. It would have a tremendous impact if more people were aware of it. I'm just thinking of the impact that the DOW ad about aerial wolf hunting has had on viewers by raising awareness of the practice to those who had previously been ignorant about it. In this case, all dog owners would be up in arms and things would have to improve for these animals. What do you think?

I'm sorry but I can't get this out of my mind. I keep thinking about my dog out there and it's killing me. Thank God, it would never happen.

Surely, the mayor or someone else can come up with a more humane method.

Also, Care2 has over 9 million members and there are less than two hundred signatures on the petition. Can this article be given a more prominent position? This would really make a difference. There are plenty of dog owners out there who would be just as outraged as we are about this.

Nora I totally understand why you are upset, I see these things everyday here in Greece and it makes me ill!! People have been trying many, many years to get the Greek Authorities to do something, in 2004 an American woman called Marijo Gillis launched a huge campaign and got 80,000 signatures to make them implement their laws. She even got Peta and IDA involved and they all had a meeting in Athens with the Greek Authorities, it made not an ounce of difference!!!! This was the year of the Athens Olympics and the Authorities ordered a mass 'clean up' of the streets, which means poisoning all the dogs which they did!!! They broke their own laws, it was on the news here and everywhere, mass demonstrations everywhere and still its the bloody same!!! Marijo Gillis had lived in Greece for 14 years and due to her campaigning she was rewarded with a revengful, horrific act. Some scum shot her four dogs and place an American flag down the throat of one of the dogs!!! That was enough for her, she went back to America and vowed never again to return.
We are dealing with an arrogant, selfish, xenaphobic mentality here and it's bloody frustrating for the animal lovers here who feel silenced and persecuted for standing up for what is right.
GREECE THE NEW CHINA!!!!
