On behalf of girls around the world, we ask that you show global leadership on women and girls' issues by helping us end child marriage through increased funding and a strong political commitment.

.The United States unveiled public and private initiatives to stop early marriage and promote girls education late last year. However, we are hoping the U.S. government will commit to doing even more to end this widespread human rights violation. Please ask Sec. Kerry to commit to increased political and financial investments to end child marriage, and support girls who are already married.

The message:

The U.S. Senate, G-8 leaders and The Elders all have recognized that child marriage is a human rights violation, and we know you agree. The practice rips girls as young as age 10 from their homes, and puts them at serious risk of being infected with HIV, being subjected to domestic abuse and dying in child birth.

It also almost surely means that they -- and their children -- will be mired in poverty for the rest of their lives. More than 67 million girls worldwide were married before the age of 18. If child marriage continues at its current rate, 142 million more girls in developing countries will be married by 2020.

CARE, a humanitarian organization with decades of experience working with poor girls and women, agrees with the international community that ending child marriage is fundamental to achieving other development goals, including improving maternal and child health and empowering women and girls through education and economic opportunity.

Congress has demonstrated its bipartisan commitment to address this issue through passage of the International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act in 2010 and 2012; now, it is time for you to take action as well! We ask you to commit to increased political and financial investments in girls to end child marriage and support married adolescents.

On behalf of girls around the world, we ask that you show global leadership on women and girls' issues by helping us end child marriage through increased funding and a strong political commitment. We need action and investment from the U.S. government to reach vulnerable girls in developing countries as quickly as possible. With your help, we can bring an end child marriage!

Thank you for your consideration.

Now that the internet has shown us how rampant this deplorable, archaic practice is, it is our responsibility to do something about it. Thank you for speaking up! Now if only more will follow suit. It is hard to believe in 2013 this is still happening. Signed and noted.

Signed and noted. Thanks for sharing, Beverly. Child marriage is disgusting and wrong. It robs girls of their educations and childhoods.
