The government should be promoting equal opportunity for all people, regardless of their race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, skin color or national origin.

In 1941, President Roosevelt promoted equality in the work place for all Americans through his Executive Order 8802, also known as the Fair Employment Act. This piece of legislation protected the American people from discrimination based on race, national origin and religion.

In 2002, however, President George W. Bush signed Executive Order 13279, which allows religious organizations to hire employees based on an individual's beliefs. The Bush Administration admitted to giving $10.6 billion to faith-based organizations who openly discriminate against religious minorities in their hiring practices. This has led to an indirect prejudice against the LGBT community.

President Obama has promised to end this discrimination, but Executive Order 13279 is currently still in place. Stand with the ACLU and urge President Obama to stop federally-funded religious discrimination immediately.

I agree that "President George W. Bush’s Executive Order 13279 is detrimental to our system, and it violates the Constitution."

Signed and noted.
