Nearly 2 years ago, 14-year-old Daisy Coleman* was raped at a party by a high school football star and grandson of a powerful local politician in Maryville, Missouri. But now, hes walking free while Daisy and her family struggle to survive with what happened to her.

Immediately after the rape, Daisy and her mother went to the hospital and reported the rape to police. Matthew Barnett was charged, and he confessed on tape.

But months after the rape, county prosecutor Robert Rice--who has close ties to the alleged rapist's influential grandfather--dropped the charges. Worse, the town and high school ganged up not on the rapist, but on Daisy and her family.

This is Steubenville all over again. And just like the Steubenville case, if thousands of us speak out and shine a national spotlight on Maryville, we can get justice for Daisy and her family. Will you sign our petition to demand justice for Daisy?

Tell Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster:
"No one should get away with raping a 14-year-old girl just because of his powerful family connections. Use your authority as Attorney General to investigate the rapes in Maryville, Missouri, and punish the rapist, the prosecutor, anyone else who used their position to block justice for Daisy Coleman."

This is inexcusable behavior on the part of the rapist. The mere fact that he is roaming free, speaks volumes on the justice system of this town. I sincerely hope that this young lady, and her family get the justice and help that they deserve.! Thank you, Beverly for this. Signed.

The rapist's well-heeled grandfather is sending the wrong message to his already spoiled grandson. If he really loved his grandson and wanted to make sure he grew up to be a good and decent man, he'd let him face the consequences of his actions --not pay his way out of them. I wonder what he'd do if the situation was reversed and Daisy was his beloved granddaughter?

Gladly signed and noted.

Signed. Maryville is a college town. The alleged rapist was a "townie", who now attends college in another Missouri college town. A few days ago Robert Rice, the local "prosecuting" attorney, has put out feelers to recruit a special prosecutor from another jurisdiction. He did this solely to protect himself from accusations that he did not do his job.

Make sure the legal system works for alleged criminal, then give him maximum punishment. This is such an awful story, and there are surely more like it where connections, apathy, or even government cutbacks let boys/men get away scot free. Too much rape culture.

Already signed, and received good news today - I'm quoting the email -

(From) State Rep. Stacey Newman via CREDO Mobilize
(Subject) Special Prosecutor Just Named for Daisy Coleman's Case

Dear Friends,

I have Great News!

Because of all of you in Missouri and around the country, our demands to re-open Daisy Coleman's case were heard loud and clear.

My good friend and former state legislative seat mate, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker has just been named by a Missouri circuit court judge as the special prosecutor to re-open Daisy's case.

Prosecutor Peters Baker has an excellent reputation and has long stood up for victims of domestic and sexual assault. I served with her in the Missouri State Legislature and as a longtime advocate for domestic and sexual assault victims, she is an excellent choice. She will be fair and professional which is exactly what this case needs.

Thank you so much for signing the petition Demand Justice for Daisy. Because you used your voice, Daisy Coleman will finally receive justice which she and her family so deserve.

Thank you,

Missouri State Rep. Stacey Newman

Signed. I read an article that says the hacker group 'Anonymous' is threatening to get involved. Hope they don't get caught, it's disgusting that the hacker involved in exposing the Steubenville coverup is facing more prison time than the actual criminals.

NO Not signing the inaccuracy is enough. According to published reports there was no confession of rape but of consensual sex. BIG difference. If a petition has such a major error then the whole thing must be redone or thrown out.

Prosecutor Robert Rice should be relieved of his duties for failing to file charges on the rapist Matthew Barnett. Political connections have no business in covering-up a felony crime of rape. AG Chris Koster: Investigate this matter immediately.

Where are the parents who were responsible for these kids when they were having this wild party? We also need to hold the parents accountable for child neglect. Would you let your 14 year old go to a drunken party?

Joanne Dixon (36)
Tuesday October 22, 2013, 2:07 pm
Scott, whatever you are smoking, quit it. A 14 year old and a 13-year old are too young to consent to sex, so any sex with them is rape. But even an adult woman, incapicitated by drugs, is unable to censent to sex. These gorls were also drugs. So this is rape twice over.
