Draconian Russian anti-Gay laws put any LGBT Olympians or advocates traveling to Sochi to compete in 2014 Winter Olympics, in tremendous danger. Foreigners are subject to imprisonment just like Russians are; for "advocating non-traditional relationships".

The Olympics are supposed to be a time to come together as a global community and celebrate diversity and athletic achievement. But thanks to draconian anti-LGBT laws recently passed in Russia, being gay -or even being "pro-gay"- can get you arrested there.

The egregious human rights violation has tragic implications for LGBT Russians and their allies. It also completely undermines the spirit of the Olympic games, and it puts any LGBT Olympians or advocates traveling to Sochi to compete in tremendous danger.

Olympic athletes should be worried about competing and representing their country, NOT if they'll end up in jail for who they love.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) must take a stand against this kind of human rights violation from an Olympic host nation.

Tell the IOC to publicly state its support for ALL athletes and forbid any attempts by Russia to violate the rights of LGBT Olympians!
It is not just "form" or "mere threat".....

Any RAINBOW CLOTHING, T-shirts will be banned - by FANS, also! - ANY Same-sex Displays of Affection, hugs, kisses, hand-holding, etc. - Rainbow Flags, buttons, funny hats, pom-poms, etc. - ANY SPEECH suggesting "Gay is Okay" - NO Freedom of Speech, for Athletes, Friends, Family, Fans, Tourists, Foreigners... PUBLICLY ACKNOWLEDGING YOUR SAME-SEX HUSBAND OR WIFE, IS DEFINED AS A CRIME IN RUSSIA...

Severe Punishment with IMPRISONMENT AND FINES. BIG ones.
Gays, both Athletes and Fans, will have to stay DEEP IN THE CLOSET - OR ELSE! {And the "else" ain't pretty!}.

Some suggestions:
BOYCOTT the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014. As individuals, or get the US Olympic Committee to Boycott.
BOYCOTT THE CORPORATE SPONSORS OF THE WINTER OLYMPICS. Like Coca-Cola and others... Omega Watches... WRITE to the Corporate Sponsors, go to their Web pages...
MOVE THE WINTER OLYMPICS IN 2014, TO SOMEWHERE ELSE - like maybe Vancouver, Canada, that hosted them before and has experience?

There are MORE PETITIONS TO SIGN, on both, and
Sign ALL that you agree with!

Meanwhile, within Russia, INCREDIBLY BRAVE LGBT PEOPLE ARE FIGHTING ON, DEMONSTRATING, GETTING HURT, in spite of the Repression...

Coca-Cola, Proctor&Gamble, Visa, Samsung, Panasonic, and OTHERS:
Please go HERE:

"Some gay rights activists like RUSA LGBT have asked corporate sponsors and partners of the Sochi Olympics -- including Coca-Cola, VISA, Omega Watches, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Procter & Gamble, Samsung and Panasonic -- to withdraw their support and funding unless Russia can ensure the safety of all visitors to the Olympic Games."

You can also look these Corporate Sponsors up on the Internet and e-mail them directly.
The title says it all.

Free speech and the LGBT community in Russia are under attack by the Russian government. Countless LGBT Russians and their allies have been detained, arrested and in some cases beaten for protesting the wrong-doing of their government. Our attendance would only condone these hateful, bigoted and horrific acts. Although The United States Olympic Committee has stated "the Games can take place without discrimination against athletes, officials, spectators and the media," the law in Russia is clear:

'The new law allows the Russian government to arrest and detain gay or "pro-gay" foreigners for up to 14 days prior to their eventual expulsion from the country. Russian residents are subject to these fines and sentences as well.'

'The law, which was passed unanimously by both houses of Russia's Parliament, imposes a fine of up to 5,000 rubles ($168 USD) for any citizen who shares information discussing "non-traditional sexual relations" with minors that might cause a "distorted understanding" that gay and lesbian relationships are "socially equivalent" to heterosexual pairings, reports Russia's RIA Novosti. The fines increase if the person disseminating the "propaganda" is a state or legal official, rising all the way to 50,000 rubles ($1,530 USD) for an official promoting such information to children.'

'Any individual using mass media or the Iinternet to share information about LGBT identities can be subject to fines up to 100,000 rubles ($3,050 USD), while officials are subject to fines twice that amount, and legal entities face a 1 million ruble fine or 90-day suspension for discussing LGBT people.'

If the United States Olympic Committee attends the 2014 Olympics in Russia, they will be ultimately condoning these extreme acts of homophobia.

"The law... was passed unanimously by both houses of Russia's Parliament"... UNANIMOUSLY!!!

"We WILL arrest...." There you have it, folks!

WINTER OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATING will definitely be affected -
Figure Skating is practically a "Gay Sport" and that should MAKE NO DIFFERENCE IN HOW AN ATHLETE IS TREATED.

According to the Russian draconian laws, even ACKNOWLEDGING YOUR SAME-SEX MARRIED SPOUSE OR PARTNER is a PUNISHABLE CRIME - for TALKING ABOUT a "non-traditional" relationship..... yes, TALKING...

These laws according to how they are written, EQUALLY AFFECT RUSSIANS AND FOREIGNERS - 4 Dutch tourists HAVE ALREADY BEEN ARRESTED under those laws.
You don't have to BE Gay, just SHOW SUPPORT...

Why not have each offically appointed as 'embassadors of good will' or tmeporary 'American Embassadors' and give them diplomat immunity...I would suggest a boycott but the 'boo's" would be deafening' of course.

That being said, apparently this is the only choice we have at this time to express our 'outrage' over this issue....

"Diplomatic Immunity"! That's a great idea, Jae!
There ARE actually SEVERAL "Boycott" Petitions, you can look for them on and forcechange...

Also suggestions to BOYCOTT AND WRITE TO the CORPORATE SPONSORS of the Olympic Games - including such ones as Coca-Cola, Proctor&Gamble, OmegaWatches, Sony, etc. -

Also there is supposedly a campaign going on to Boycott Russian Vodka - but the Gay groups themselves, as I have read, don't hold much hope for the success of that...

No one will be able to get the Teabager Klan to give up their Russian Vodka..after all it's their second choice of refreshment..second only to their own brand of KoolAid. It's hardly detectable....very easy to mask the smell....a splash of cologne and they're good to go on to church even.

Barbara Tomlinson (431)
Wednesday July 31, 2013, 3:26 pm
Welllllll..... Jae, it might be hard to get GAY PEOPLE to give up their Vodka, even - they do like to celebrate! {And they've got plenty to celebrate, these days, in spite of everything! at least in some States - Gay Marriage!}

Vodka is very widely advertised in Gay Publications - of course, there is OTHER Vodka besides Russian, so maybe those publications would advertise the OTHER brands... worth a try. {Wuz going to say, "Worth a shot..."}

Barbara Tomlinson (431)

Liliana: The Russian govt ain't gonna "reconsider" NOTHING.

Rather, the IOC, the Olympic Committee, consisting of RICH GUYS WHO MAKE PILES OF MONEY OFF THE OLYMPICS, THEY are to be cited for their HYPOCRISY, in CLAIMING, with NO EVIDENCE OF IT, that Gay Athletes will be "safe" -
that is ABSOLUTELY A LIE, and I can see it leading to TRAGEDY, if Gay Athletes are so stupid as to BELIEVE them -
in essence, GAY ATHLETES ARE BEING ASKED TO "RECUSE THEMSELVES" from the Olympic Winter Games...
especially affects FIGURE SKATING, practically a Gay Sport...

The Gay Community is not of course a Monolith! Reaction has been DIVIDED, so far. One part of the Gay Community, as recorded in the Gay Press, wants to BOYCOTT the Winter Olympics in Stochi, and everything connected with it - including the CORPORATE SPONSORS, [such as Coca-Cola, Proctor&Gamble, Sony, Panavision, OmegaWatches, etc.].

Others, however, say that Gay Athletes and Fans SHOULD go to the Olympics, and MAKE A DEMONSTRATION OF SOLIDARITY THERE, risking arrest and worse, if necessary! [They might be beaten, even expelled from the country - and thus not be allowed to participate in the Olympics at ALL! In which case, one hopes that OTHER ATHLETES FROM THEIR COUNTRIES, ACT IN SOLIDARITY WITH THEIR GAY BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!]
Among the prominent figures advocating the latter course, are Olympic diver and AIDS activist Greg Louganis; and progressive sportswriter Dave Zirin.
Among those advocating Boycott, are Russian-born American filmmaker Wes Hurley.
ALL, however, advocate SPEAK OUT! ACT UP!

Other ideas promoted in the Gay Press, are, TO BOYCOTT ALL THINGS RUSSIAN - which would include STOLI brand Vodka, and other Vodkas. If Vodka is really your thing, then OTHER COUNTRIES export Vodka too - such as Poland. Change brands - and don't forget to go after publications that ADVERTISE Russian brands.
Another thing, is to WRITE the State Department and Congress and Officials, to NOT GRANT VISAS to those Russian legislators behind the Gay-repressive laws. We don't want such HATE spread in this country! There is good precedent for this... ALL European and other countries can do this.

This information comes from the Seattle Gay News, a weekly newspaper, the August 2, 2013 issue.
