Under Russian Law, any Olympic athlete, trainer, reporter, family member or fan who is gay -- or suspected of being gay, or just accused of being gay -- can go to jail. It is now illegal to say the word "gay" in public, punishable by two weeks in jail.

NYTimes July 21, 2013: "...Just six months before Russia hosts the 2014 Winter Games, Mr. Putin signed a law allowing police officers to arrest tourists and foreign nationals they suspect of being homosexual, lesbian or “pro-gay” and detain them for up to 14 days. Contrary to what the International Olympic Committee says, the law could mean that any Olympic athlete, trainer, reporter, family member or fan who is gay — or suspected of being gay, or just accused of being gay — can go to jail."

-It is now illegal to say the word "gay" in public, punishable by two weeks in jail.

-If you are a foreigner suspected of being *supportive of gay friends* or issues, you can be jailed for two weeks.

-There are further laws in the works, one of which proposes to allow authorities to forcibly remove homosexual members of families.

Everyone who passes within Russia's borders is at risk, including this 15-year-old boy whose fate after the violence at the end of the video is unclear (viewer discretion advised):

The boycotts in around the world of Russian vodka are a good start and a nice thought, but unless world leaders break their inexplicable silence, there will be no real change. Let's all follow actress Tilda Swinton's courageous example and stand up to injustice.

Our goal: to get President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry to speak about the issue publicly, something that has not been done yet or in any other major country.
We are not puppets to Putin, so let us not behave as cowards.

these ruuski's can go to hell - we've got to withdraw endorsement and/or athletes from participating - hold an alternative gay Olympics elsewhere - the world cannot allow this bigotry!

Well, I've signed, but this spying thing has placed President Obama in an invidious position - and it appears entirely possible to me that Putin is trying to push the US into exerting 'moral authority' it sadly lacks, which could have horrendous effects, possibly tilt into global destruction...

UPDATE ON REACTION FROM THE GAY COMMUNITY:
The Gay Community is not of course a Monolith! Reaction has been DIVIDED, so far. One part of the Gay Community, as recorded in the Gay Press, wants to BOYCOTT the Winter Olympics in Stochi, and everything connected with it - including the CORPORATE SPONSORS, [such as Coca-Cola, Proctor&Gamble, Sony, Panavision, OmegaWatches, etc.].

Others, however, say that Gay Athletes and Fans SHOULD go to the Olympics, and MAKE A DEMONSTRATION OF SOLIDARITY THERE, risking arrest and worse, if necessary! [They might be beaten, even expelled from the country - and thus not be allowed to participate in the Olympics at ALL! In which case, one hopes that OTHER ATHLETES FROM THEIR COUNTRIES, ACT IN SOLIDARITY WITH THEIR GAY BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!]
Among the prominent figures advocating the latter course, are Olympic diver and AIDS activist Greg Louganis; and progressive sportswriter Dave Zirin.
Among those advocating Boycott, are Russian-born American filmmaker Wes Hurley.
ALL, however, advocate SPEAK OUT! ACT UP!

Other ideas promoted in the Gay Press, include, TO BOYCOTT ALL THINGS RUSSIAN - which would include STOLI brand Vodka, and other Vodkas. If Vodka is really your thing, then OTHER COUNTRIES export Vodka too - such as Poland. Change brands - and don't forget to go after publications that ADVERTISE Russian brands.
Another thing, is to WRITE the State Department and Congress and Officials, to NOT GRANT VISAS to those Russian legislators behind the Gay-repressive laws. We don't want such HATE spread in this country! There is good precedent for this... ALL European and other countries can do this.

This information comes from the Seattle Gay News, a weekly newspaper, the August 2, 2013 issue.

I would hope NO ONE would show up at the games at all, thereby depriving Russia of every last cent in tourist money spent on even hotel rooms.

Ans to Lee, while I understand your point, I don't agree simplt because that would be segregating the games.
While Gay Olympics were held in the past, I would hope we are beyond the need for that anymore, and that those 5 rings mean Inclusiveness and unity, which we have sadly taken far to long to acheive in many aspects of daily life as it is.

As for Putin himself, remembering how he wooed the younger generation and garnered much support from them these last few years, I certainly hope they see now what the rest of us did then and turn on this bastard before he can inflict anymore damage...thanks Barbara

I think by "hold an alternative Gay Olympics", lee meant to say, "hold an alternative GAY-INCLUSIVE Olympics".
Doesn't look like that's going to happen, at this point.

We still have lots of time to MAKE OUR DISPLEASURE KNOWN in every way possible - WRITE your Legislators and President Obama, who so far have been awfully silent about the treatment of Gays in Russia!
Also BOYCOTT, and let the companies and manufacturers KNOW you are Boycotting - and the magazines and TV stations that carry those companies' ADS! Russian Vodka, Russian Travel, things from Russia...
