With capital becoming ever scarcer, Russia is fighting hard to lure businesses from around the world to invest there.
But until Russia ends its brutal crackdown on LGBT people — including officially sanctioned kidnapping, torture, and rape of gay youth and severe laws prohibiting any expression of support for LGBT rights — Russia must be challenged, not financially supported.

James R. Silkenat, president of the American Bar Association (ABA), is lending his credibility, and that of his associated organizations — the ABA, Human Rights First, and the World Justice Project — to the effort to entice American investors into investing in the Russian economy.
On November 18, 2013, at the offices of Goodwin Procter, a New York City law firm, he will be the keynote speaker of the Russia Forum NY investment seminar, a role from which he has refused to withdraw.

The ABA president’s support for investment in Russia is shocking.
As was done to combat South Africa's apartheid, the call to Americans of conscience should be to divest from Russia, not invest.
Mr. Silkenat, since you have chosen to remain involved with the forum, you must use your platform to offer a full-throated, unvarnished warning to Russian government officials that their abuse of basic human rights is bad for business.

This Petition is JUST STARTING and so it doesn't have many signatures yet!
Please CIRCULATE IT widely!!!

We are BOYCOTTING Olympic Sponsors like Coca-Cola, Sony, etc. [Sponsors for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, in February 2014.]
What a SHOCKING THING it is, that the PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION - of all things!!!!! - wants to SUPPORT RUSSIA FINANCIALLY rather than Boycott!
And the associated organizations of Human Rights First, and the World Justice Project!

There is a Care2 group, "Bloody Olympics", that is open and anyone who wishes may join.

We deal with problematic issues that arise, not only in the Winter Olympics at Sochi, Russia, in February 2014;
but also ANY Olympics and Big Sports issues - LOTS of Human Rights issues for example, and other issues - Big Sports are full of scams and corruption, have a dirty underside.

Signed - Petitioning James R. Silkenat James Silkenat, president of the American Bar Association: Condemn Russia's anti-gay laws at Russia Forum NY

Actually, for the majority of Russians they are in better shape financially because Putin has nationalized and then sold stock into the natural resources, ergo - more jobs. The Homophobia goes hand in hand with the arcane ideas within the Eastern Orthodox church. Putin is a thug, and knowing that he using something that will have the blessing of the church, he able to ostracize a minority with the blessing of many. Extremely religious people tend to follow the strong (even ruthless) patriarch.

"On November 18, 2013, the NYSE will host Russia Day,
when leading Russian government officials
— some of them the very architects of Russia's homophobic law banning any gay-positive speech and tacitly encouraging violence against LGBT Russians —

will ring the closing bell at the stock exchange, to sickening applause from NYSE traders."
Those same Russian officials ought to be DENIED VISAS TO COME TO THE UNITED STATES -
for engaging in HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS that are

Our govt officials like to TALK a good game, where it's EASY for them -
Not so much.....

A Petition and Outcry that DID get a response - ! -
The Head of the American Bar Association, James Silkenat, DID CANCEL his forthcoming appearance at the New York Stock Exchange scheduled "Russia Day", inviting investors to invest in Russia!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!
And if you're in NYC on November 18th:

"Activists with Queer Nation NY will be protesting outside of the NYSE {lining up at 26 Wall Street} on November 18, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., during the time that Russian leaders will ring the NYSE's closing bell. Queer Nation NY will unravel a 75-foot banner calling attention to Russia's brutal crackdown on Gay rights, while urging the NYSE to make a bold statement of support for Russia's LGBT community."
From the Seattle Gay News, November 15.

More good news from Seattle Gay News, November 15, 2013:
Not only did the Petition and Outcry, cause the Head of the American Bar Association to CANCEL his proposed appearance at the New York Stock Exchange's "invest in Russia" day; but,

Law Firm Goodwin Procter LLP backed out of an event supporting Russia Day - ! - AND
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was convinced to withdraw the city's official support for the event - !

What can I say... sometimes Petitions DO work.....
