Right now, hundreds of people are being arrested in Washington, DC in a historic wave of peaceful civil disobedience -- the biggest such environmental protest in a generation.

Bravo to both of you, Carole and Kathy - I am delighted to see this protest (which is long overdue). I STILL do not understand how people can be arrested for a peaceful protest but I surely do admire those who are out there making OUR voices heard.

While I appreciate ANY and ALL actions for a cause . . . If there's one thing I've noticed that brings one to the forefront -- It's Avaaz.org.

LET'S GET THIS BEYOND THE 750,000 SIGNATURES REQUESTED.

WHY NOT OVER 1 MILLION?

Thank you Kathy, excellent work!

The infuriating crying shame is that we can really get all our energy requirements from 'splitting water' into hydrogen and oxygen.

Please take a minute to watch the short clip. I believe it to be extremely important. I cannot believe I wasn't aware of it. The world needs to know about this.

All our energy needs can be met through 'splitting water' which has been available since 1985. The inventor was just your average American. He was not a scientist, he just had a simple but great idea;
Water is H2O. Split it for Hydrogen and Oxygen. Using hydrolysis, which he accomplished thousands of times more efficiently than ever before, he powered his car with water. Burning hydrogen (created as required) instead of petrol, the exhaust gasses are pure water vapour only.

Sadly, the inventor of this simple technology is dead because of 'food poisoning' or so the official news statements read. I don't wish to speculate - I only wish to promote his idea. This video will turn your world upside down;

http://theforbiddentruth.net/videos/1429/stan-meyer-water-car-inventor-murdered.html

LA to NY on 22 gallons of water!

He was offered a billion dollars in cash for his patents.

In 1998 he signed a contract with the Department of Defence to build a 30 million dollar research facility.

He was dead the following day.

I wish the protestors well.

Petition signed.

I agree with Matthew Cloner's comment, "But whatever happened to that guy named Barack Obama who was running for president in 2008? Hard for me to reconcile him with the man who is presently sitting in the Oval Office!"

The latest disappointment is in Obama's caving in on the ozone pollution regulations. It seems that he would rather give in to pressure from big polluters than to protect the health of the American public.

President Obama's comment line is in my phone as a contact. Think it's time I give it a speed dial number. I'm fighting the carbon monster till the bitter end. Obama could use this to his advantage by showing strength and forward thinking. We The People don't want Keystone XL. Period.
If this goes through, which as a Nebraskan it looks as if it already is "go," I'm going to have to I'm going to have to make a candidate out of play dough or carve a chunk of wood because I've never missed an election in my life but won't vote Obama if he doesn't stand strong against this, and the other candidates don't like non-millionaire who aren't benefactors. Maybe I'll write in Kathy, Carol...one of you fine folks.

To be quite honest I have a gut feeling the president will cave into this, too like he just did with the Clean Air Act. Hillary, who has been a strong supporter of this pipeline from the start, would probably break his neck if he did give in to the public will.
Thank you Kathy and again Carole for pushing this.

The Tar Sands as a solution is far from a solution, not even to speak about what it does to the environment. It is a hugely expensive process and requires natural gas which is also depleting rapidly in order to process it. It takes fossil fuels to actually prcess

Scott mentions hydrocarbonization. Also, not a feasible alternative to fossil fuels.

Hydroelectricity - if you replace all of the cars with hybrids, we will be using the same amount of gas in five to seven years due to economic growth. As economies grow, the need for energy grows. Conceptually a good idea but has major challenges. Industry is reluctant to heavily invest fuel cell technology because there is no hydrogen infrastructure to produce and deliver cheaply hydrogen. On the other hand there is no infrastructure because there is no demand for hydrogen.

Both needs substantial breakthrpoughs in technology, not only in fuel cell technology, but also hydrogen production, storage and transportation.

Takes the equivalent of three to six gallons of gas to make enough hydrogen to drive a car that would take 1 gallon of gasoline to drive the same distance.

All expects who study this comfortably state that it will take 40 - 50 years for the technology to be a feasible solution.

I think what Scott is referring to is "Stanley Meyer's water fuel cell".

The water fuel cell is a purported free energy device invented by American Stanley Allen Meyer (August 24, 1940 – March 21, 1998). He claimed that an automobile retrofitted with the device could use water as fuel instead of gasoline. The fuel cell purportedly split water into its component elements, hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen was then burned to generate energy, a process that reconstituted the water molecules. According to Meyer, the device required less energy to perform electrolysis than the minimum energy requirement predicted or measured by conventional science.[1] If the device worked as specified, it would violate both the first and second laws of thermodynamics,[1][2] allowing operation as a perpetual motion machine.[2] Meyer's claims about his "Water Fuel Cell" and the car that it powered were found to be fraudulent by an Ohio court in 1996."

Looking a wind and solar solutions, although they may contribute significantly as alternative sources, there is nothing that will replace the growing demand for energy. China, alone, with its growing economy demands more and more energy. Economic growth is dependent upon energy. We are facing one of the greatest challeges the world has faced and yet, we go down the same path, day, after day, after day. Not only do we have to find new methods of developing alternative energy, we also have to re-think the way we live. Again, North America has waited until the threat is right on top of us, rather than planning for this in advance. We are in big, big trouble.

Clinton blind to over 600 arrested, deaf to 1000's protesting, unanswerable to nation saying 'No Pipeline.'

Hillary Clinton backing the Keystone XL Pipeline by approving the final Environmental Impact Study, despite two weeks of thousands of pipeline protesters at the White House gates where Daryl Hannah along with some 600 others have been arrested, greens turning against President Obama for failing to foster renewable energy for human rights and needs, and Nebraska's Gov. Heinman (R) writing to the president and Secretary of State urging them to deny the pipeline permit, is adding pre-revolution fuel to October 2011 Occupation of D.C. Numbers of protesters in the nation's capital is growing as and plans are for citizen recruits to continue swelling there until "the corrupt machine is forced to stop" a key organizer has told the Examiner.

I left Alberta last year in fear of the rising number of people ill in the province from MS to cancer to other potentially fatal autoimmune disorders.

I am ashamed that in our own country, people are mostly silent-money seems to be a stronger motivator than the health of our children, and the destruction this project will cause. The repercussions are world-wide, and horrifying.

You must watch this short video (halfway down) explaining the horror and sheer scale of this permanent destruction of vast areas of land, water (underground as well as rivers and then seas). Part of the air pollution is 36 million tons of CO2 per day - 1.3 million cars each day.

This is not just an apocalypse for the local area, if it is not stopped it will affect every living thing on Earth. We have to make a stand about this or we might as say farewell to Mother Earth and die of shame.

Please do all you can to stop this from happening. If I could get there I would.

President Obama, Meet Us In the Square
News — admin September 2, 2011 at 4:55 pm
Dear President Obama—
Earlier this year you walked across Lafayette Square to meet with the Chamber of Commerce officials, who have spent more money defeating progressive candidates than any other group in our nation. You joked that you wished you’d done it sooner, and that you should have brought them a plate of cookies when you moved in.
Maybe tomorrow you could take the time to walk half that far, to see a big cross-section of us, many of who worked to get you elected. We’ve conducted the largest civil disobedience protest in many years on your front door for the last two weeks, with more than a thousand Americans from every state in the union getting arrested. The only response we’ve heard from the White House is your press secretary saying he had chosen not to discuss our action with you.
We’re opposed to the Keystone XL pipeline because it’s an environmental disaster. It scars the landscape where the tarsands are mined, it presents unacceptable risks of spills in crucial parts of the American interior, and it’s a fuse to the biggest carbon bomb on the continent. Your premier climate scientist, NASA’s James Hansen, who was arrested earlier this week, said heavy exploitation of the tar sands would mean it was “essentially game over” for the climate.
You alone will get to make the choice of whether to grant a “presidential certificate of national interest” to this project. We hope you’ll join us to hear our assessment of the project. We don’t have as much money as the Chamber of Commerce, but maybe that shouldn’t always be the deciding factor.
Sincerely,
Bill McKibben

Aside from signing online petition at the Tar Sands Action page, I've been calling the White House almost daily. They're closed for the weekend, but I highly recommend calling and leaving a brief, respectful comment, i.e. "I am disappointed that President Obama is turning his back on the environment. I urge him to reject the proposed Keystone XL pipeline." I usually have to call twice before I get though and then there is a minute or two of a recorded message before a live person picks up. 202-456-1111

realistically they need more than 750,000 signatures to make them notice. The USA has a population of over 300 million, and the amount of capitol they gain from this deal is immense. It's Obamas duty to not authorise it, but then someone else will. The only factor in choosing to sign or not is whether the US gets the money, or if someone else gets it.

How many of you who dont want this pipeline use gas and oil, or plastic products?

The harsh reality is, we ALL use the stuff. VERY few of us are doing anything to truly limit our consumption. The idea that there can be a 'green' solution to our levels of consumptions is nonsense.Solar and wind are fine on a small, local scale, but could never power a city. Hybrid vehicles cot ore in energy to make than they ever conserve.

So, sure, I'd like to NOT see this pipeline put in. But that seems pretty unrealistic considering our collective lifestyles.

Or do you all live off grid, typing on home-made computers?

With respect Mr. Walk F, you are absolutely wrong. There are so many wonderfully clean ways to provide energy and many substitutes for plastic (glass, PHB Biocomposites, Liquid Wood bioplastic or biopolymer, and corn polylactides). There are less destructive and more efficient ways of making plastic than tar mining, which should be illegal.

Millions of people are doing a great deal to limit their energy usage and polluting effects. There is so much we can do and so much more as well. Unfortunately the giant corporations are not on board to such an extent it appears that they want to kill us all.

Green energy is not a nonsense. It is incredibly efficient already and becoming more so all the time. If we invest more in these it will get even better. I am sure we cannot afford to go any other route. It takes just 22 gallons of water to drive right accross the US but I am sure that can be improved upon :p

Water Splitting can provide for all our needs instead of fossil fuels and nuclear power, even to power our cars. Please see my post (near the top of this page) for details or watch this same video clip;

It is evil people that are dragging their feet due to vested interest and greed - they are the main hurdle to a cleaner world. A much smaller hurdle is posed by people who are negative, lazy and ignorant.

Absolutely, Scott F. I am offended by that remark, as I and many other Care2 members and others I know are limiting their consumption.

Thank you, Kathy, for this post. Noted; singed previously. Hope President Obama will listen to the voice of his, and not only his, people, as many are evidently, and rightfully, opposed to this. The magic formula is green energy.

P.S. When I signed, the counter showed about 600,000 signers. Incredible number indeed; such a voice has the power of a storm! So, when will the other party start listening? When it sounds like a hurricane? Ever?! I mean, what more should people do then voice their opposition so strongly to deliver their message?

Should it not work, I am seriously for a rebellion (!), since, if things are how they look like, this would be a serious reason for righteous indignation.

Signed petition and I have read all the informative comments posted here. I just wanted to post lYoutube videos concerning green energy. This project came up in one of the ZEITGEISTt documentary movies. The project is called The Venus Project created by Jacque Fresco. Initially it seems "far out" but in actual fact it could be implemented right now. The technology already exists. I think we all know that there are solutions to problems for everything, humans, animals and our planet. But the agendas have to change. Priorities have to change and of course power and profit has die and then everybody can breathe and sleep peacefully. Free to enjoy life and to nurture our spirit.

I was also very enamoured with the Zeitgeist Movement, there are undoubtedly some great ideas within it. I was keen to get on board until I found out their extreme views on religion. They do not like to tell people about these at first. The origin of their contempt for monotheism is "The Christ Conspiracy" by D.M. Murdock (Acharya ).

There are some convincing lies about Christianity but anyone who really knows their faith and history well will not be shaken by it. There is a comprehensive rebuttal of their wild claims about the origin or Christianity on the link below.

http://www.preventingtruthdecay.org/zeitgeistpartone.shtml

If anyone feels their faith is still weakened they can ask any specific questions privately or otherwise.
I can see no good reason for an anti religion stance; true science and true religion are great allies. They teach and reaffirm each other in a balanced soul.

It only lessens the movement's chance to become successful by a huge amount; more than 50% of people on Earth are religious and many more tolerate and have no wish to campaign against it. It could be a sneaky way to dress up an evil agenda that would otherwise be unattractive; there are other ideas that have the same loft goal without having to bring personal beliefs into it. Who would join a single agenda religious hate group other than extreme and evil people?

They have motivated me to oppose them proactively with their lies about Christianity. I can see no good reason for it. There are some who abuse religion to make divisions but it happens with race and gender too. We cannot ban that. At best, the Zeitgeiters are throwing the baby out with the bathwater in my opinion but I do believe it is intentional. Why else would they significantly lessen their chance of success?

Surely the importance of saving the planet from the crazies in power is more important than petty divisions or some irrelevant personal vendetta based on personal views which are none of their business. It would only help their stated mission to leave religion well alone and welcome all comers. This is one reason I think it is an important goal in their eyes to cause people to give up their faith or prevent people finding faith. This is too dark for me; they don't even mention love as part of their utopia. I am concerned it is not what it professes to be.

Noted and Signed, thanks. I'll be pleasantly surprised if Obama sided with the environment on this one rather than polluters and big oil which his presidency thus far seems to show a bias toward! He doesn't seem to be a president that is really concerned with the environment, wildlife, and the long term best interests of the American people! I'm very disappointed in his leadership thus far and unless I really see a major turn around, it will be the first time that I didn't vote for a president of the Democratic Party. I will have to write in a candidate too or hopefully their will be a green party candidate who will emerge before this election! Obama seems to be a person who sounds good in his speeches but can't follow through in his actions! A man of little conviction, and more interested in his own ambition to be re elected rather than genuine concern for the American people! His policies and actions seems to be much more in line with the Right wing! I wish there was more of a difference between him and the Republicans but the distinction is getting more and more blurred.
