The natural nest sites on which many of our bird species depend, such as holes in trees and buildings, are fast disappearing as gardens and woods are 'tidied' and old houses are repaired.

we have left almost all of our property wild so any dead trees not near the house or road are left for critters to live in. we also have nesting boxes we put up near the house where we cleared. i love to feed and watch the birds. i even leave dandelions since lots of small birds like to eat the seeds off the puff balls. all critters need a home and food to eat. we do what we can to help out.

It's such a kindness to provide our feathered friends with habitat...thanks for posting.

I NEEDED TO PUT UP MORE BOXES THIS YEAR DUE TO PREVIOUS SUCCESS IN OUR GARDEN. ALSO I GOT A PLEASANT SUPRISE TO FIND SOME BOXES CLAIMED BY BLUE TITS ALREADY, WHILST SPARROWS & STARLINGS ARE FIGHTING OVER PLACES UNDER THE ROOF/DRY GUTTERING AREAS. A BIRCH LOG ROUND BOX USED BY BLUE TITS LAST YEAR HAS BEEN TAKEN OVER BY 'SOLITARY' BEES, THEY ARE NOT SOLITARY BECAUSE I BELIEVE ABOUT EIGHT OF THEM ARE SHARING THIS BIRD BOX.

I live in an apartment and don't have the luxury of a garden, but maybe I will try one on my balcony, I do have bridseed and fat balls out there so maybe I can encourage a little feathered friend to nest out there. My big problem will be the owners of my building and the neighbours.

Have to put up some more boxes this year, and check the conditions in others right away. I get sparrows nesting right in my cedars!
Thanks for the reminder Kathy.

we actually bought one in the fall but can't figure out where to put it where the squirrels will leave it alone.
