This is actually a very interesting issue dealing with companies that patent simple technology with no intent of ever developing or selling the product. They merely exist to sue companies that eventually stumble across the "obvious" technology on their own.

Why else would this company sit on this technology for a decade?

This is what toyota's lawyers are arguing--although ultimately the cost gets passed on to the consumer... thats you or I.
