"Live simply so others may live" - do we really need 37 flavors of potato chips? Or $40 a jar face creams?
Or cars that go from 0 to 90 in 60 seconds?
This is a timely article, Daphna - thanks!

Without a doubt the grandma and grandpa generation knew common sense approaches to live decently with little or no resources. Today, we are dependent on others for products and services, but it is not due entirely to lack of knowledge or laziness. To make it in today's world, a second or even third income is required to live the comfortable image of today, therefore, there is little time in doing common sense and practical things around the house and in particular things for sustenance such as gardening and canning, chopping wood, etc.

At times, I do pine for the earlier simpler back in the days...there appeared to be a more sense of self worth...

From the article...

7 tips for simple living
• Consume less.
• Put people before possessions.
• Live lightly on the land.
• Support local businesses.
• Less is more—really.
• Demand quality products.
• Remember that everything and everyone is connected.

Thanks Daphna! This was right up my alley!

This is a really wonderful article. Bartering was a huge way that people sustained their families when my Dad was growing up. Especially during the depression days, when they basically had no money, and things were rationed. Families swapped things they raised that they had plenty of, for other things other families had plenty of. I have noticed it is coming back also. I just watched several documentaries on the old swap or bartering becoming a cool thing to do now. It saves on resources, it saves our landfills, it makes use of out of items, that would otherwise wind up in the dump. It is definitely a green source of saving our forests, soil, air, water, by not having to make another one to replace it. As the old saying goes "One mans trash is another man's gold"!
