It's hard to believe that before the early 20th century, almost every city in the world was "car-free." Zoom ahead 100 years later, and you have to do some real digging to escape the army of cars now clogging the planet's roads and highways. Sure, there a

These places give me greater incentive to work towards that One-Way ticket...looking forward to the time when I can rest and write in a truly quiet place. I've been hopping in my car since I was fifteen years old; but, I surely do support all urban efforts toward minimizing auto traffic and providing mass transportation. Our cities are too loud, too dirty and the congestions create dangerous driving as well as enable outdated, irresponsible dependence on commuting, urban sprawl and Big Oil.

This was special -- Thanks D for putting this out there, did E-Mail this one out.

There are a couple more that I have been to personally - Eze, France and one small area in the South of France, you drive into the country and you have to park at the bottom and walk up...

Loved these, though the one on Greece looked like there were so many houses they wouldn't of have anyplace for a car to go.

Great ride a bike!

Aw Venice, my favorite city in Italy. I have wanted to go to Macinac Island in the United States for years. It looks so pristine and beautiful in Lilac season. Hopefully someday we will go there. In the meantime, I will settle with my memories of Venice.

It truly is nice to know that in today's time, there actually are a few spots left that are vehicular free. I'm sure that Fido and kitty feel more at ease too, when they dart out into the road.

I would just hope that the slack isn't taken up by another form of transport that would cause congestion like boats, that actually are more of a nightmare when it comes to obnoxious emissions.

Unless things have changed recently, Sun city Arizona allows no cars within it's city either. It's a suburb of Phoenix. A great way to go, me thinks...car free!

I was born in arizona and they refused to build a underground train system here because automakers PAID az reps NOT to! The"BUS" syatem here is very LACKING compared to say... San Francisco where buses and trains run every 3 minutes at times, the heat in phoenix is deadly with all of the mass concrete and asphalt. Sun city is NOTHING, BUTTT cars! with crazy, medicated drivers!

Thank you for posting this! What a wonderful group of cities I would love to visit. I can see where their water, air and soil must be just awesome. Plus I would assume they have much less stress in their lives, they are definitely healthier I would say, and also I bet there is much less drama in their lives, living a simpler type of lifestyle all together than those of us that do have cars, and honestly more cars on the highways than our roads can handle. Hats off to these 7 cities!
