In a speech delivered earlier this week at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, former British prime minister Tony Blair cast atheists and violent religious extremists in the same light, as enemies whom people of faith must "confront."

I agree with John Blair is a loony toons!
But ...and I know this might ruffle feathers, but it needs to be discussed.
I disagree with you Chaz (not trying to single you out just the statement).
They are not different.
There are Extremeist from all walks of life.As a Christian it does pain me to think that other Christians would fall into that group. But it is true.
Atheist are no different then anyone else on the face of the planet.Just as Atheist are not less of a human being then a religious person, neither is the religious man.
I have Atheist friends and we just learn to respect each other.
But,even on this site I have seen extremeist Atheist lash out at the religious community as a whole.
Showing a great amount biogtry towards mainly Christians and Catholics.
It is very disturbing to be on a site that claims to be against such nonsense and hatefulness and to come across some pretty disturbing statements.
But that is their beliefs.I have mine.
Mine happens to be that in essence if we stripped away all the things that we blame for the evils happening in this world.....
Religion,Race,Gender,Orientation social Classes....
Human beings will always find something to blame or use against someone or another group in order to act out violence or to assert their dominance in this world.
Those individuals become the groups that we call Extremeist.
And there is NOT ONE group of people that is not capable of such things.
Never has,never will be.
That includes Atheists.
As a Christian I need to acknowledge the violent history of extremeism of my religion and
as Atheist, that might be reading this, you need to acknowledge that there are extremeist out there that are Atheist or hide behind Atheism as a form of violence, biogtry and assertion of Dominace over other people.

I hope that I did not offend anyone with this statement and pray that anyone that reads it will try to understand what I am trying to say.

You are always so pleasant Gorilly!
Wiccans are not considered atheist, they are pagans...or am I wrong on that one?
I have several Wiccan friends and actually support a group called PACA or Pagans Against Child Abuse.
Wonderful group doing great work.
Have a great week sweetie,
Lady L

L.L. As an atheist I don't believe in god or gods, however that doesn't mean that I am not spiritual and compassionate.
I know the difference between what is morally right and wrong, I practice random acts of kindness. I give to the poor. I volunteer my time for worthy causes. I oppose racism and all tyrannies against people of all races and creeds and I do all this because it's right and I want to; not to build up "brownie points" with some imaginary being or out of fear going to an equally imaginary perdition run by an estranged angel.
You are right about pagans though they are generally not considered atheists in fact most have many gods; perhaps there is safety in numbers.

Yeah I thought so on the Wiccan thing. There is a difference for sure John:)
I understand what an Atheist and just as you say that you don't want my beliefs imposed upon you neither would I like yours imposed upon me.i have respect for whatever one believes in,that is your right and every human beings right.
My first statement was trying to get across that it doesn't matter who you are or what you believe in or whatever you have extremeist that come in all forms not just religious ones.
Like I said I have seen some really nasty comments by self-proclaimed atheist on this site that I can assure you are very extremeist in nature.
I am not sure what got up Blair's butt to make the comments he made.
My thought was not support everything he was saying, but to make a point that just because people are Atheist does not mean their are Extremeist factions that claim Atheism and are using it to impose their beliefs upon others.
Just as Christianity has a history of this practice so does every religion, culture,Race,Social Class,etc...
They all do it...We all do it.
And if we don't acknowledge the Extremeism that is out there then we turn a blind eye to the damage that it does to other human beings.
with that said we also need to be VERY careful in who we are saying are the Extremeist."Fundamentalist,Extremeist,etc...." are all words that are being swung around at everyone in order to cause an enviroment of intimadation and to impose one's will upon the other.
As individuals it is our duty to be aware of such things.

Also not every Christian believes Atheist to be "evil people".
You might be Godless, but that does not mean you are not human.
I woould hope that Atheist would take that same outlook at religious people like myself.
Have a good one.

I have nothing against those who believe in god or gods and believe they like me can believe what they like. As long as they're not on my doorstep in suits proselytising or coming from Islam with their women in bags telling me I am an infidel and godless because I like alcohol and my women unwrapped they are welcome. Live and let live is a pretty good code to live by.
Incidentally I was raised in The Free Church of Scotland which is about as close as you can come to being a Catholic without actually being one. I am godless by choice. :)
These days the leaders of all the countries and terrorist organisations currently at war appear to be committed to one religion or another there don't appear to be many, if any atheistic war-mongering tyrannts at present.

Sending a Green Star is a simple way to say "Thank you"

You cannot currently send a star to Chaz Gaily because you have done so within the last week.

Lady, I am probably one of those that you refer to as a hostile atheist because I do attack religion when it makes ridiculous claims but I also would never physically harm anyone except in self defense of myself or another person, even if that person is a believer. Religious extremist cannot make that statement.

"These days the leaders of all the countries and terrorist organisations currently at war appear to be committed to one religion or another there don't appear to be many, if any atheistic war-mongering tyrannts at present."

You made my point John before I made.

ever heard of atheists killing in the name of logic?

Lady Libertarian (76)

My point is that there are Extremeist in all forms.
A true Christian would not kill in the name of God.Same for a Muslim. It is simply not apart of our religions.
People very esily hide behind ideas and belief systems inorder to act out.
These people are Extremeist. That does not mean all Christians or Muslims are Extremeist and killers etc..
Wait....wasn't Stalin an Atheist?
And he killed millions of people.so was Hilter.
No one and I MEAN NO ONE is incapable of wrong doing.
Not me,not anyone on this site not anyone on the face of the planet is incapable of anything.
Our capicity for Compassion and love is only matched by our capicity for violence and hate.

In my opinion...just my opinion.
People need to step away from whatever their belief system is and realize that Humans commit acts of violence not Religion or faith.
Human beings.
Just like guns don't hurt and kill people, the person behind the gun does.

Okay so friend literally just called.
And Hilter would not be consider an Atheist due to his belief in the occult.

But these are just my opinions.
I don't blame all athesit for the hate I have seen come from Extremeist.Just like I don't blame Occulist for the vile things that Extremeist have done in the name of their religions or the extremeist in the name of Islam.
I blame people,plain and simple.
Blair should not have generalized all atheist...there is no question in my mind. But Athesit can not in good conscience run around and say that they are incapable of horrible things.Because it is simple not the case.
Athesit are still only human same as everybody else.
No better,no worse.
