Illinois Gubernatorial Candidates Fudge Their Answers on the Question of Evolution
US Politics & Gov't  (tags: illinois, quinn, hynes, evolution, darwin, religion )

Paul

There were certainly some standouts, mainly from the GOP candidates. Adam Andrzejewski, for example, tried being clever by answering the "do-you-believe-in-evolution" question by saying that "God created Darwin." Zing.
E.J. Dionne's Wishful Thinking: Tea Baggers and Religion's Role in DC's Non-Debate
US Politics & Gov't  (tags: religion, tea party, tea baggers, health care )

Paul

Not only has religion not left the debate, but it may have ensconced itself so firmly, enmeshed itself so completely, that it almost goes without saying.
Who Is Really Coming After the North Carolina Atheist City Councilman?
US Politics & Gov't  (tags: atheism, religion, north carolina, bothwell, discrimination )

Paul
- 14 days ago - examiner.com
While I'm glad that an atheist elected official gets some notice, and I'm glad that it gets the country talking about religious and nonreligious freedom, the fact that the ban on atheists is in the North Carolina constitution has, I fear, leant legitimacy
Impatience With Frank Schaeffer, or, My Failure to Review a Book
Society & Culture  (tags: religion, atheism, christian right, richard dawkins )

Paul
- 15 days ago - examiner.com
The dilemma is not that Schaeffer is attacking those on my side of the fence, but that he is doing so in such a ham-fisted, uninformed fashion. I am only three chapters into this short book, and it has already made me wish I had never picked it up.
Joe-Mentum Is Mocked By Two Bespectacled Atheist Bloggers
US Politics & Gov't  (tags: video, lieberman, health care, jowls )

Paul
- 36 days ago - blocraison.blogspot.com
I mean, what better way to really take Joe-mentum down a notch than by having two nerdy-yet-adorable atheist bloggers with thick-rimmed glasses do lame-ass impressions of His Whiny-ness? Let me answer that for you. There is no better way.
Binding International Anti-Blasphemy Law Advances, Proponent Warns of Rise in Terrorism If Resisted
Society & Culture  (tags: religion, secularism, blasphemy, freedom of speech )

Paul
- 40 days ago - examiner.com
An internationally enforceable anti-blasphemy law is on the march, and according to the chair of one UN subcommittee, resistance to such a backward and oppressive treaty will result in increased terrorism.
Hillary Clinton Is Wrong: The U.S. Has a National Security Interest in Afghanistan Education
US Politics & Gov't  (tags: world, foreign policy, hillary clinton, afghanistan, taliban )

Paul
- 46 days ago - examiner.com
How could a more enlightened Afghanistan population not be in our direct national security interests? We certainly have no fear of violent extremism from South Korea or Sweden, so it only makes sense that not only would it be nice if Afghanis had better e
The New Atheism and the Great Divide - My Talk to the Northern Virginia Ethical Society (Audio)
Society & Culture  (tags: new atheists, dawkins, atheism, religion, science )

Paul
- 54 days ago - examiner.com
On October 18, I gave an address to the Northern Virginia Ethical Society on the subject of the New Atheism and the divides within the atheist community--a subject that seems to have boiled to the surface of nonbelievers' discussion of late.
Ross Douthat Plays Up 'Conflict' With 'Foe' Islam
Society & Culture  (tags: religion, islam, catholicism, anglicans, pope, douthat, new york times )

Paul

Is New York Times columnist Ross Douthat calling for religious war? Well, no. But he is spoiling for a fight of sorts, and he might also be adding a dose of refreshing honesty to the interfaith discussion.
Newsweek Religion Columnist Calls Atheists 'Adolescent Regurgitators'
Society & Culture  (tags: meacham, hitchens, dawkins, atheism, religion, newsweek, atheist )

Paul
- 67 days ago - examiner.com
Lisa Miller of Newsweek, it seems, has had it with us nonbelievers. In her latest column, she seems to be indulging is some form of guilt-laden catharsis, awash in shame for having devoted too much precious ink to the New Atheists.
