It is a curious paradox that, while our Government is often perfectly happy to pour scorn on repressive regimes abroad, when it comes to offering asylum to the persecuted inhabitants of such countries, all this righteous anger seems to evaporate.

We should be consistent - how can we often asylum when we are so busy complaining about immigrants and blaming all the wrongs of our country on them, including those that should be directed at our Gov't and the INS. Noted.

No one blames all our country's problems on immigrants, not even on the illegal ones. But the illegals certainly are a problem that needs to be dealt with and should not be ignored.
We do grant asylum, but it would be completely impractical, not to mention stupid to invite every persecuted inhabitant of this world to come here. Far better to change things in their own countries and make things better for all their citizens.

If only people could make things better in their own countries. But usually they are up against tyrannical regimes and their secret service psychopathic goons who think nothing about torturing and killing. And they are usually supported by the likes of the USA and the UK - especially if they have oil and gas reserves! So let people flee and give them sanctuary. The UK could make up a bit for having denied entry to the German Jews in the 1930s - condemning them to the Holocaust.

Eleanor,
Britain has a poor track record and things are getting worse. We are deporting all the wrong people while those that stay should be among some that should go.

I have no doubt that the same
thing has happened in the US,
it just never got leaked to the
media.
This is horrible, and no excuse
why the Brits don't grant this
young man asylum.
Thanks, Eleanor.
