Afghan Women Still Struggle, 8 Years on

World  (tags: world, women, women's rights, afghanistan )

Afghan women have seen their status rise and fall repeatedly over the past three decades, attaining a measure of equality in the early 1990s before the strictly Islamic Taliban muscled their way to power and forced women to again wear the burqa.

There are wayyyyyyyyy too many women suffering horribly around this world. it's time we take back our lives, and let men know that we will NOT be abused, quieted, or weak in strength or soul!

"attaining a measure of equality in the early 1990s"

That is a LIE!

The oldest women's rights organisation in Afghanistan, dating from the 1970s, R.A.W.A., reminds us that the Northern Alliance, who ruled over Afghanistan in 1992-1996, was as oppressive towards women's rights as the Taliban was - and the current government in Afghanistan is a fake "democracy" which is mainly made up of Northern Alliance warlords!

Women in Afghanistan have been oppressed severely since the 1970s, after the people of Afghanistan created their progressive government, with women's rights and other human rights, including land redistribution (taking rich men's excess land and sharing it amongst the poor peasants who were toiling on that land), but the USA and Pakistan armed and trained rich landlords and fundamentalist mullahs in guerrilla and terrorist methods, to end that progressive government. It was only after that that the USSR sent in its military to protect that progressive regime, and the USA escalated its support for the fundamentalists.

Want more information?

I recommend that you start with what the women of Afghanistan say, e.g. the R.A.W.A. website:

You SAY that, but your actions betray your words. E.g. when you support capitalist, imperialist parties, such as the U.S. "Democrats" and "Republicans", UK "Labour Party, and UK "Conservative Party", who invade and occupy other countries for greedy reasons (with false "pro-democracy" propaganda), support coups against people's democratically-elected leftwing governments, allow huge corporate exploitation, and support brutal regimes (e.g. with military aid and arms sales) in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc., all of which oppress women terribly in many ways.

...and you are also oppressing women when you support corporations, such as the corporate media, and their propaganda, e.g. the above rightwing, capitalist, imperialist article, from CNN corporation. This article claims to be showing the truth about women's oppression - but it is implying that we should support actions which actually end up oppressing women, such as supporting the U.S.-led occupation forces in Afghanistan, which are (1) supporting the brutal, corrupt, fake "democratic" government iof Northern Alliance warlords in Afghanistan, who oppress women as much as the Taliban ever did, and (2) the U.S.-led occupation forces are killing and maiming and causing much destruction, hardship and suffering to civilians, which cause many people to support or join the Taliban as a response against what the occupation forces did to them.

How about you listen to what the people of Afghanistan want? You could start by listening to the voices of the women of Afghantistan, e.g. on the website of Afghanistan's oldest women's rights organisation, R.A.W.A.:

This just makes me so angry! I am so sick of me and my sisters worldwide being treat like no more than property. If we are ever to free the animals that so many of us on care2 care about we have to free human women from slavery and control first!! I am so frustrated because the women many of them are just to passive and not willing to go out and fight for themselves. Are we that brainwashed as to believe that we are not worth it? I have left that way of thinking. I am not a victim or a second class piece of property I am a human being and I will fight for my rights and the rights of animals until the day I die!!!!!! Thanks Katie!!

Bombing a country does not help women.

Thanks for the story,Katie! Even though this country has had massive problems for decades now, we are more responsible than most for what is going on because (in the US) our government started bombing without any knowledge or good plans or any notion on rebuilding or anything but big dreams of exploiting America's fears and making war profiteers and military contractors rich. What a colossal mess and it's hard to see where we're making anything any better.

Before the Taliban takeover, Afghan women were:
60% of teachers at Kabul University
50% of students at Kabul University
50% of civilian the government workforce
70% of school teachers
40% of doctors
These figures speak for themselves. Katie. Thanks.

Why don't Afgan men don't stand for real diginity of their mothers and wives? Taleban opression is disgusting, hopefully, Afgan army with help will be able to eliminate them. If US withdraws know all those buddies will get a safe hideout.

Simon, Northern Alliance suppresses women much less. Even the ethnic groups making Northern Alliance have traditions of more tolerance and respect towards women than Taleban. Of course, that tolerance isn't anywhere close to the right women enjoy in Imperialism, but still better than Taleban.
