Cutting-Edge Science Reveals: World Won't End on December 21, 2012

Mix one part science fiction, one part misunderstood Mayan history, one part Hollywood movie hype, and quite a bit of public credulity, and what do you get? A new wave of doomsday hysteria that is causing scientists to step forward to reassure the public.

The one thing that they have not covered is the 2012 ELECTIONS! When Obama is voted out, with his impressive record of doing what HE wants and lying about it, I will not be surprised if he does not go peacefully and pushes the "Red button of Global destruction". Making the 2012 threat a prophecy that this arrogant, insane and dangerous man will get to boast that he himself fulfilled! Kind of puts this in a whole new light doesn't it?

It seems unlikely that any strong Democratic candidate will run against President Obama in 2012 even less so that one could defeat him, so he is likely to be the Democratic candidate in 2012.
The chances that any Republican could defeat President are also quite small because while Americans do tend to have very short attention spans, there's plenty of pain hanging around from Bush's 2 terms to allow anyone to forget all the damage the GOP did in such a short time.
I've heard President Obama admit his mistakes, like any honest mature person does. I have not heard him tell any lies. He's extremely intelligent and knowledgeable. He's a good decision-maker and problem-solver who relies on the facts rather than ideology. I'd like him to clean up faster, but the GOP keeps putting party first and stalling out the clean up efforts as much as they can.
It would be difficult if not impossible for any President to tell more lies in four years than Bush did in 8, or to lie about so many critical issues. So, if Bush got reelected after all the lies, there's no reason why President Obama would be voted out? He can't fix 8 years of corruption and messes in a week or a month or a year or even four and even if Americans are unhappy with the state of the nation then, it's hard to make a logical case for any GOP candidate overcoming the messes they made, and the deficit they caused, and the damage they've done to their brand.
So, I'm curious actually. Who do you see as defeating President Obama in 2012?
I'm also curious as what you mean about doing what he wants? President Obama was popularly elected with a much bigger mandate than Bush had, and we also elected more Dems than GOP to Congress. They are doing what we put them there to do, at least, as fast as they can considering the realities of the situation. Doing what we want them to do and elected them to do is a good thing in a democracy, isn't it?

The "end of the world" scenario is an ignorant & uninformed reading of the Mayan calendar. The Maya are still around, and they have written no books. The date denotes the end of a very long cycle (and let us keep in mind that the Gregorian calendar has a lot to be desired, and challenges the accuracy of many dates). The future is uncertain - it is up to us ! Let's focus on doing what is healthy for all life on our planet, NOW ! That is the best use of this point of time.

Meanwhile, it's always good to balance science with any such set of popular notions, irregardless of origin. If one pays attention to science, it is clear we can no longer continue to behave as we do on this planet.

@ Raymond S.: Yes, that does put it in a new light. In a way that anyone can alter- and add to this vague 'prophecy' to further their own political, ideological and commercial agendas.

Obama isn't going to fulfill this so-called prophecy, it's the people who believe in it who are fulfilling it every day. If anything, it could be used to somehow justify any, like you say, 'red button of global destruction' action because people are already in a fatalistic mindset. Global apocalypse is a pretty far fetched scenario to me but I know from my own experience that some christians actually believe that the wars currently fought are all part of the christian's 'end of days' scenario and see no reason, or possibility, to try to stop them. Why change God's plan? Or in this 'new age' version, the 'cosmic' plan?

My calender also has an end date but that doesn't mean the world is going to end that day. Just because the Mayas lived thousands of years ago doesn't mean their calendar had any future-predicting properties. If common sense didn't tell you that you should really ask yourself why you feel a need to have a date in your own agenda saying:

"December 21, 14:00 - Doom and destruction today, End of world. Don't be late!"

Thanks for the article Katie :)

Well, cutting edge science hasn't disproven anything. Just proven a misunderstanding in the major evidence for. Big difference. Yes, the Mayans never predicted the end of the world. They predicted the end of the current cycle. They just never predicted the start of the next one, and it just so happens, their end coincides with the end of the world. All the signs are coming true, just as we were forewarned. H1N1, The Great Recession, War, Death, Famine, Pestilence (see H1N1 and more), and at least 4 false prophets (Monkey tail boy, two faced girl, 8 limbed girl, teenage Buddha). The science is there for when we align with galactic center, and there's always a chance the sun will release the mother of all CMEs. Put it together, and what have you got? We're all screwed.

And yes, there is still time to change things. Prevent god's mighty wrath from above. But people won't. It's not in humanity's nature to do what must be done. That's the sad part. An easy out was provided, told to us, and still people refuse to take it. Yet when all is said and done, they'll cry and whine about how unfair it was they weren't given any warning, any chance to change things, when they were. Well, here's a hint to stop it: This is volunteer week.

One of the three Fatima predictions also mentions the World will end in 2012. Fortunattely, I have far more important things to worry about than the End of the World.

No one knows the day or the hour.. that is in the word... not even Jesus does.. only the Father in Heaven... but there are clues.. that will take us into this season... and we will be able to tell that the season is near like when a tree looses it leaves you know that the fall is on the way... but we will not know the day or the hour.. so when they say to you this and that.. just ignore what they say... because many false prophets will come saying this and that and there is the Lord.. he will be coming in the CLOUDS in glory...
