If only Americans would hang their laundry out to dry - and commit 16 other acts of environmental kindness - they could slash US carbon dioxide emissions by 7.4 per cent by 2019.

Well, out here we don't use the dryer much. I hang some of the clothes around inside the house, and some outside - they dry quite quickly. We do fluff the towels a bit because they air dry so stiff, but nothing like a full dry cycle. Bread dough rises like a dream here too. I can melt butter most of the year by putting it in a bowl on the counter top (except in the dead of the winter, then it only softens).

In fact, we just picked our first fresh lemons of the season. They're really early, but then it was 103 just a week ago last Saturday. When climate change gives us lemons, (I make lemon cookies or pie, actually, and I'm looking for a recipe for lemon bread) . . . . .

I already do many things to reduce my carbon footprint, from not buying bottled water, using energy efficient appliances, unplugging things not in use, using the new compact fluorescent bulbs, recycling everything we can here in our town, turning lights off when we are not in that room, my house is weatherproofed completely, walls, and all, plus storm windows, we do clean filters on our A/C regularly, we use the microwave a great deal more if possible rather than the oven and stove, I make large meals in a crock pot, then I freeze them, thus it saves on cooking later, keep the car tuned up and the tires at the proper aired up state, .... just a few things we do, there are many more... I have not hung clothes on the line, but honestly, I hang lots of my clothes up in the house and allow them to air dry, then I use the dryer for heavier items. I wash in cold water for the most part, except when I need to bleach towels and whites, then I do use warm for the washing, then cold for rinsing... there are many little things we can do that add up to a whole lot of conservation, without feeling any pain, or missing out on anything.
