Radioactive debris has been found in canyons that drain into the Rio Grande, but officials at the Los Alamos National Laboratory say there's no health risk.

Yes, and remember how Cheney and others in the Bush administration were pushing for more nuclear power plants despite the fact that we still don't have any where to put the nuclear waste, and despite the fact that we would have to cart the waste through neighborhoods and cities under the current plan, and despite the fact that the waste remains deadly for centuries. But, hey, the people left in place by the Bushies are now assuring us that there's no health risk from radioactive debris in the water in New Mexico - everyone who believes that stand on your head. How do we get rid of every Bush appointee really fast and keep them away from government for good?

You bring up a good point: the waste, how it is a problem for eons (depending on the half-life). And here is the monkey in the wrench: suppose we never discovered 'nuclear'.

The unranium, thorium, radium, polonium and so forth would still be in the ground, killing people. In fact, the second-leading cause of lung cancer in America is radon, primarily from radium.

The only thing that has changed is the concentration. We have taken very weak concentrations into high concentrations.

that being said, good point: proponents of nuclear are not willing to live next to a nuclear facility.

Toxic is toxic is that not what the word means... what ever the amount that trickles down... sherbet the more exposure over the years will definitely impact us and the environment... these conditions are not acceptable and government should step in and bring in strict laws regarding toxic waste

I lived in New Mexico most of my life. As a child the road into Los Alamos was a beautiful 2 lane road through amazing canyons, Now it is a 6 lane monster and as you approach you see Machine Gun lookouts. Los Alamos and it's neighbor White Rock are in some of the most beautiful land in the USA , yet any native New Mexican has known for years that the water is beyond polluted. When there is a forest fire the amount of Radioactive waste used to be reported as the trees had absorbed so much. I had severe lung infections every time there was a fire in the National Forest there, Yes it is TOXIC and I do not have hope that in this lifetime the Land of Enchantment will be able to deal with this pollution. It is really unbelievable to people from outside the area what goes on there. It is a guarded city high in a Canyon with only one road in or out. In the 1950's even the children had to have a special pass to enter the town. I don't think any one knows what goes on there or that we ever will. Radioactive = Death. No Nuclear testing !

I doubt that it trickles. More like gushes.

With Miss Jenny's comment and along with Miss Chaz's thought, there is not much more to add. I will say though that radiation exposures have always been conducted with healthy adults. Can they really say that low level contaniminants won't harm wildlife, or how about an infant...

Even a trickle is too much. This is wrong!

Unfortunately the only solution is the extinction of mankind which includes all the environmentally aware people - shame but that will eventually be the best solution because of greed/self interest etc.
I hope the next life that evolves in millions of years will possess empathy as it's dominant associated genes (none of the aggressive species).
