An alarming rise in elephant deaths in India because of habitat loss and poachers' bolder forays into government-protected zones has led officials to arrange a meeting to address the problem.

Very tragic. I suppose they wont be happy until all elephants are gone, humans seem to want to be on this earth alone.

When they get very serious about punishing poachers with life sentences or the death penalty for the damage they do to all of us, and then when they get serious about enforcement and really hunt the poachers down, then they can end poaching. Not before. We are going to lose tons of species because of habitat loss, environmental damage, and climate change (including devastating drought). We cannot afford to lose to poachers.
For those who have read comments from people who deny climate change, here is another aspect. Some say that the methods we are using to combat CO2 production and to slow the effects of climate change will have adverse effects that will be biggest for the poorest nations. Well, think about what devastating droughts will do to the poorest countries in Africa and in the sub-continent like India?

And people who didn't see the value of elephants when they were alive, and who were happy to destroy their habitat from greed, will learn some very hard lessons when the elephants are gone. Too often we have done this kind of damage before and only realized the full effects of our actions later.
I hope something will be done but I am not at all confident of it. People are too selfish and greedy to care about the future and about their children and grandchildren - we've certainly seen ample evidence on this site, even in some Care2 comments.

Ellies are persecuted and hunted down all over.. this is a horrible crime again these animals... one day when there are none left.. those responsible might have some remorse and regret... but there again they will be into the rhino, and hippo's for their ivory

Deciding to "hold a meeting" when a situation gets really bad is just shutting the door when the horse has bolted. India has failed with the tiger and it will fail with the elephant UNLESS they get their act together and put their immense wealth into PROTECTION of these endangered wild species that are needed by all future generations of the human race.

Asian elephants are truly a world treasure and I am glad that the Indian government's concerns are seriously approaching the problem, initially here anyway.

We all know that every circus elephant we've seen or will see or Asian elephants as the African ones are too independent and defiant to be trained. The Asian on the other hand is much more mild mannered and willing to associate with man. Let's not allow this gentle behemouth to go away...

Thanks Katie,
Simone, I hope we don't end up on our own! But the future is looking bleak for elephants.
