"We found the head of one dog in the cage with another dead dog. We're not sure what happened to the body -- whether the other dog was forced to eat the body before it died," said Steve Lawrence with Kalamazoo County Animal Services.

OSHTEMO TWP., Mich. (Newschannel 3) - Several dogs are dead and a dozen others have been taken to a animal shelter after suffering neglect and abuse at an Oshtemo Twp. home.

Officers say the dogs were living in total squalor at a home on West KL Ave. when they were found on Monday, and those that were still alive were covered in feces, with no food or water.

Janel Hosie, a next-door neighbor, says the owner of the home is actually a dog groomer, but told Newschannel 3 that the inside of the home was in such bad condition that the owner moved out last fall.

“They had to go to the bathroom in the crates, go to the bathroom on each other,” said Hosie.

Hosie says that the dogs were basically stuck in prison cell-like cages - sometimes three dogs were crammed into one small cage, and says she heard their owner not too concerned about the situation.

“Like it wasn’t really a problem, like she loved her dogs, that she was able to take care of it,” said Hosie.

But what animal control officers discovered Monday, is not what they say they saw two years ago when they saw the dogs outside the home. At that point, they say, they found the dogs healthy, and left without concerns for their care.

“We’d never seen, never been in her house to know what was actually going on in that house,” said Kalamazoo Co. Animal Services Director Steve Lawrence.

Lawrence says that when they did go inside the home on Monday, they found cages and dogs standing on empty bowls to get out of the feces.

But when given the chance to escape, the dogs didn’t move.

“The dogs didn’t come out, it was like, they didn’t know they could, or they’d never been out,” said Lawrence.

Janel Hosie says that the worst of it, is that four of the dogs died, and their owner, a groomer, should have been able to care for them better than even the average dog owner.

“It’s just unbelievable to me that someone can say they love their dog and let this happen,” she said.

Animal services says that some of the rescued dogs will go up for adoption, but others are so traumatized that they have no choice but to euthanize them.

Their owner of the dogs could eventually face animal cruelty charges, and Lawrence says that he never wants her to own a dog again.

If you are interested in adopting one of the rescued dogs, call Kalamazoo County Animal Services at (269) 383-8775.

Why the word EVENTUALLY...surely the word NOW should apply...what more proof is needed that this "person (I use the word loosely) needs a HUGE wake up call..& more importantly that the case should be used as an example warning to others that such horror cannot be tolerated!....but 1st & foremost....a BAN to ensure such persons NEVER get the opportunity to inflict such suffering again!

I would hate to have this person as a groomer for my dog. This person needs the maximum. Put them in a cage for awhile without food and water and see how they like it. Thanks for sending Dave. Thanks End Cruelty.

Noted. Jay, I absolutely agree that we must devise a practical way to ensure that abusers are identified and monitored to make certain they do not get their hands on hapless animals again. Even though adoption centers are now requiring application and approval, it is still so easy for these cold-hearted people to receive 'free puppies, cats' from private sources desperate to find them homes. Thank you for this important story.

Here is another sickening abuse situation that makes me ask...how did they finally find out? This is in a neighborhood how could this have gone on for so long unnoticed? If the owner moved out last fall...who was taking care of (and I use that loosely) the ones left inside the house?
I am glad someone finally spoke up. Animal abuse needs to be reported not ignored. These poor dogs if they survive deserve a better life.
Thanx Dave & End Curelty

Yes Patti we all need to play a role in monitoring the condition of animals in our area. I have asked everyone I meet to go up to houses that seem to be in foreclosure and to check for animals left or to ask the neighbors if there were animals in the household and if they know they left with the family. I have emailed the Kalamazoo authorities expressing my opinion that this should be prosecuted with the most severe sentence available handed down.

Thanks goodness they were rescued-sadly not in time to save the four who persihed. This owner needs to be locked up with the key tossed!!!! Horrific abuse of innocent-helpless animals will not end until these abusers are prosecuted and appropriately punished. This is so wrong

This woman must be punished. Jail would be the place for her, she would have her own cage to live in.

The best we can keep doing is: Spay and Neuter our pets; Support free or low cost pet care services in communities, including spay and neuter programs; Opt to adopt from rescue groups and shelters; and Never buy from pet shops or 'boutiques' who pay for puppy mill litters. Doing good will become the norm AND in our lifetime, we must pray.

Anything less than being totally responsible for any living being we take into our life, to care and provide for - forever, is shameful! I don't know how people let any beings suffer without food or care, but it's done more often than we know. Perhaps some suffer with mental illnesses, but MOST are selfish, heartless, worthless, useless, and just LESS than human.

People like this are mentally ill I think. I think anyone who doesn't care about the suffering of others, be it animals or humans, is mentally ill, and should be prohibited from ever going near an animal again.

It is completely beyond any stretch of my imagination how anyone can do this to a poor defenseless animal who cannot take care of itself! I'm horrified!!! I hope & pray this owner is punished severely and is never, ever allowed to own or even touch an animal again!

Noted! If the neighbor knew that the owner of the dogs moved out of the house last fall, why on earth didn't she alert the authorties then? I certainly hope in this state animal cruelty is a felony and that they lock that woman up for years. People guilty of such abuse should never ever be allowed to have another animal. It seems to me that animal cruelty is definetly on the rise. Shameful!!

Morgan G. that is an excellent idea, we can all take a bigger role in stopping this abuse if we pay closer attention to these homes abandoned. Anyone heanding up the township board should take charge of this, call or mail your own board of regulators, they have to help stop this.
ty for the post!
