The olinguito weighs 2 pounds and resides at 5,000 to 9,000 feet above sea level, making this raccoon-relative tree dweller the smallest and highest-venturing of the olingo species. The first new carnivore species in the Western Hemisphere in 35 years.

So cute -- and small. Wonder how long it will take for pet collectors and marketeers to exploit them, heaping disease, containment and eventual extinction upon one of the few as-yet wild and free species remaining.

This discovery is news world wide. I sometimes wish they do not bring the find of another cute animal to the attention of the masses. For the very rich this will be just another cuddly pet to add to their menagerie like they did with the slow loris.
