NOTED, thank you Maria! As I said many, many times before: unthinkable in my country to euthanize healthy animals. We don't even kill the old, ill and/or aggressive ones. Never ever. This is called being civilized. WE NEVER EVER KILL ANIMALS IN SHELTERS. NEVER EVER!!!!! THATS CALLED BEING CIVILIZED. This waste of precious lifes makes me SO angry......

I would love to take him, I live in texas, and only me and my granddaughter. Maybe if no one gets him we could get together and you could let me know. Maybe we could get some airfare going for him to take a plane ride. I love dogs and cats, oh, well all animals . I do have cats I was wondering about that is he okay with cats. I have a big fenced in back yard for him to play in, but I would think he could stay with me a lot and go on my walks, and then go with my granddaughter when she goes... We could buy him a beautiful collar and leash, and teach him to have many good manners, if he doesn't already.... Hope some one wants him very much, but let me know.

Folks, please remember there are volunteer dog transporters out there. Many groups and are grouped according to the interstate routes the animals will be traveling. Do not assume just because you live somewhere else that the dog cannot be transported to you. It is worth checking into if you are serious and want the dog.

Sue Little (124)
Sunday April 19, 2009, 9:04 pm
Johnnie W., if you are serious why not email this woman, perrin@savinggreatanimals.org, and tell her you are interested in the dog. If he is still there, look into the transport groups. As I said, some are willing to pull and foster until transport. It is worth a try to save the dog.

Doogie has made it to the front page of Care 2. Has anyone locally come forward to adopt him?

Can you update us? There may be some members interested but would require transport and someone to pull.

It is heartwarming to see at least some positive responses! Unfortunately, I live on the other end of the 'spectrum' - South Florida and have 7 cats already. If its transportation cost ... maybe everyone could donate a few dollars to get the fare together ... I'd be willing to chip in.

This is the person you need to contact: perrin@savinggreatanimals.org

My last email has not been answered. The one before that is posted above. I am surprised the last one has not been answered as the first was answered promptly. If I get a reply, I will post but I would suggest contacting yourself as I am sure she or he (Perrin) wants to hear from the people that actually want the dog. I will try to put out the word and get some help with transport if needed.

This was the latest response and it came from a different person,Cheryl,ccanadayterp@gmail.com.

Hi Sue,

I'm so glad you have some members interested in Doogie! So far no one has stepped up for him locally or from any other rescue group. We are transporting dogs from Pasco tomorrow and Wednesday. Can someone come meet the transport in Issaquah and pick Doogie up? He's such a nice boy!

I emailed her back. This is going to take some doing and it doesn't sound like we have much time. Stephanie, above, offered to foster but we would still have to get him to her and that would require transport also and time which we don't seem to have a lot of.

The only thing I can think of to do is to try to get him boarded somewhere if we have to and that would take funds. Even trying the rescue and transport groups to find someone to pull will take time. Hopefully she will answer and let me know just what has to be done.

NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS:

Hi Sue,

Doogie is a beautiful boy, but he is dog and cat aggressive, and that doesn't usually fit for most service dogs. I always look for very personable dogs that get along with everyone and everything for potential service dogs. Can you check with her to be sure she is aware of this difficulty with Doogie? I apologize, I had no idea this was a national group! I thought you were in the Seattle area. Now that I know the scope of your listings, I can be better prepared with the dogs I send your way. Thank you so much for your help!

Cheryl

That is not good. Almost everyone on here has other animals. I haven't heard back from Johnnie but he has cats.

I am not sure who that leaves. Poor Doogie. Well Joan........

Guys, these are the last two responses from Cheryl giving a little more info on Doogie:

Sue, I'm having one of those days, too. I've been injured and have been ill with resulting infection in my wounds, so haven't been able to work, so I volunteered to help coordinate rescue for these 15 dogs that were slated to die on Wednesday. I've spent the last 15 hours non-stop on this keyboard, and am probably getting a bit loopy by now! (LOL)

I think Doogie doesn't currently have the makings of a service dog. I've lived with two service dogs, and neither one was anything like this boy. I surely hope we can find him a home. I had kind of parceled him away in my mind as "safe" and haven't been working him so hard. Out of the 15 dogs in danger (plus two extras the shelter asked for help with) I have found homes or fosters for every one of them except one...and now Doogie...so two. So the time was well worth it! An hour a dog...hey, that's not bad! It's taking me four vehicles to transport the dogs out to the homes I have waiting. Whew!

Thanks so much for putting Doogie on the list. Let me know if anyone else steps forward. I will be happy to talk with them.

Cheryl

Hi Sue,

Thanks for updating his thread. Doogie is great with people and adores school aged children that enjoy dogs. He's pretty bouncy and might knock down younger children unintentionally. We're hoping that being out of the kennel will lessen his aggression toward other animals.

Cheryl

Well, in all fairness to Doogie, shelters are stressful places for dogs with lots of other animals the dog does not know. So I think it is possible at least that he might have a different response with dogs that he realizes are part of the family and who he has had time to become acclimated too but I admit, there is a risk he might not adapt to other animals.

have talked with my husband, we still wonder if a muzzle during socializing would work. and a good school training program, we do have a lady who has classes and the dogs learn how to ignore other dogs and our test was to maintain obedience when he cat was present the last day. yes his situation could be the problem. i was told that joker was food aggressive and this just isnt true, he has shared a bowl with my two small poodles and misty the smallest poodle is the one i have problems with because she is a flat out little pig and wil eat till she makes herself sick if its a soft food, we have gone over and over this here and really want to help. we have the room and willingness to work with him. he is such a wonderful looking animal. he just needs to know he belongs somewhere and know his place, not be constantly wondering where he fits in.

Sorry, guys, it may not have looked like I was keeping up with this guy but I was. Then I had to work on some other stuff but have stayed in touch with Cherly and Joan. Dawn and Stephanie thank you for your offers too, there is a lot to fill you in on. Thanks to everyone that offered to help. Hope I have not left anyone out. I am so tired I cannot see straight at the moment The good news. DOOGIE IS SAFE and in foster care. Here is the latest email which I will post below. I think it would be nice to try to help with his shots if possible. And just like I thought, his is a strong, strong boy as you will see from reading the email. let me know what you all think. I am most definatley going to try to get him a new collar and one of those leads that wraps around the nose to control that HUGE head of his(LOL). Love you guys. The email:
Dear Sue,

Thank you so much for your lovely note. Yes, I will certainly keep you posted! The rescue caring for Doogie is one I am a partner in, so I will have some say over where he goes. His foster mom is new, but is proving to be wonderful about keeping us informed, and has already given me a full update on all his activities since his arrival in her arms at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.

Here is Doogie's story today: We arrived at the shelter bright and early at opening time. Doogie had been moved into one of the larger runs in what they call "the old building" which is a mixed blessing; for dogs that are staying, it means they will almost never be seen by potential adopters or even volunteers. I volunteered there for at least 4 months before I even knew we were permitted in the building, yet alone encouraged to go visit the dogs there and walk them! The building is old and dark. I have seen black labs that are in the darkest end runs slowly go kennel mad as no one but the staff knew they were there in the darkness, and they never saw a soul except for the twice daily feeding/cleaning routine. The positive thing about this building is that the runs are much larger than in the new building. Doogie had the luxury of having one of the runs that also has an outside portion, and so as I pulled into the shelter there was his bright "smiling" face ready to greet me! How nice! He is really such a handsome boy. It's so hard to imagine why he is still there!

Anyway, Doogie needed the largest crate we had on the transport (we got 30 animals--dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens--out of the shelter today! all very carefully fitted into one small mini-van!), so he was to be walked and then loaded up last. We did the other animals, and then my fiance, a strong man, went to fetch Doogie. We discovered he didn't have a collar, so had to go find a used one that the shelter donated to us. Once collared and leashed Doogie had a fine run with my guy. The other animals were heating up out in the van, so soon he began to come back toward the van so we could load him. We found Doogie is very strong. He had no trouble dragging my fiance a few feet, and that's not a small task! He got a better grip on the leash, spoke to him, and then Doogie loaded up beautifully on his own right up into the crate. He is crate trained! And apparently very comfortable with loading right up into a vehicle, too. He was the easiest dog of the day when it came to loading!

When Kim arrived at her destination where Doogie's foster mom was waiting, she discovered another aspect of his strength. He was in our very most secure crate, just in case, and it was a very good thing, because he destroyed it, and would certainly have escaped a less secure crate! He managed to bend the heavy metal and get both windows on one side of this secure airport transfer crate pushed completely out. He came very sweetly out of the crate and was overjoyed to be able to run around. His foster mom looked a bit overwhelmed for a moment, but soon took him in hand and off they went.

She is proving to be a great reporter, and has already sent detailed information. Here is some of what she had to say about our boy: "He's a very nice boy but marked his territory on our sofa as soon as he walked into the house. I sort of forgotten that unaltered males will do this! I can tell he's an intelligent fellow. He can sit, stay, paw and lay down upon asking...and I know he's smart in other ways as well. He's always got that inquisitive look on his face. He rode nicely in the car and responded well to the transition into our home. We have a fenced in back yard, but because he's young and fully male he probably would have the urge to want to explore beyond the fence so I won't trust him out there without watching him. He's going for a long walk this evening with me. He's a well adjusted guy and I would think he we do best with another guy that is an outdoorsy type that likes to hike and swim. He's mellow here in the house and for now seems contented sleeping on the rug in the living room. He likes balls too. I'm so happy he wasn't put down today at 11:00 am., he's a fine fellow and thanks to you his life was spared. How dreadful to kill such a fine animal that has so much to offer another. He would be easy to fall in love with."

I think she would be delighted with the contribution of a collar and lead that would make him easier to handle, as he is such a strong boy. He would likely be able to pull a woman along if he took a notion to do so, since he had no trouble dragging Sean, my 6 foot tall Marine, several feet. I will ask her, if you like. Another thing that would be very helpful would be a sponsor for his shots, as our organization spent its last dollars doing four transports to get the 15 dogs in danger out, as well as 2 extras, and then all the animals today--all in all, 46 lives spared, so well worth our money, time, and effort! We are just four big hearted women that hate to see great dogs die just due to overcrowding. I thought if you wanted to put an appeal out on the network, someone might like to sponsor that relatively small cost. It would be very helpful to us. We will be taking care of his neuter as soon as we can get an appointment, and already have a sponsor for that.

Sending to you and to Joan, to keep you both up to date on our boy. Thanks so much for your interest and love for him! He really is worth it!

Cheryl

Yes, Maria, and thank you most of all. If you had not posted, we would never have known about "The Doog". I learned a lot and want to tell ya'll more. I found the most interesting site, Pilots N Paws, that transports animals by air. I was up till 7:00 am. looking at it.I was determined that if needed Doogie was going by air!!!!

I am really tired. Again, thanks so much Maria. You post the BEST articles on Care 2. Don't know what we would do without you. Love, Sue

Just another quick comment before I sign off. For those that don't know Maria is from Romania. For her to care so much about a dog in Tacoma, WA, is truly heartwarming to say the least and shows the true spirit of those at Care 2.
