A dog missing from northern Virginia for a decade may soon be reunited with his owner after showing up in Oklahoma. An 8-year-old girl found Brindle in some bushes in Lawton, Ok., recently -- more than 1,300 miles from where he disappeared.

Ulli, he's sleeping by my feet now. I've tried to get him to talk-- begged, pleaded, and even tried to bribe with cheese-- and he's not spilling the beans. Too bad, I really wanna know too!!

Amy thank you for contacting me. I left you my number to call if you so wish. I do want to send her some bit of monies and a card saying how proud I am of her for what she did. I think most would agree with me on that matter...

Why did this baby run away and not return home? I have very mixed feelings about his story. Especially the owners comment about "not being mad". My first comment after making sure my treasured was alive and well would have been, "what did I do to make you stray so far from home"? That's just me. I hope the remainder of this baby's life is happy and peaceful.

The dog IS going HOME you guys...I just got off the phone with the mum and got to talk to baby girl!!!!! She is soooooooooooooo sweet. Brindle is probably a wanderer or someone picked him up...but either way he is getting excellent care by these wonderful people...and will be going home soon to the origional owner...who is probably stunned and he is very happy brindle was found..he was sorley missed. Tristian is really an angel to her family and this pup...

How awesome that the little girl is so loving and caring. My only hope is that the precious dog gets to stay where he will be loved and cared for.

I don't like the ex - owner' comment at all. The dog was near death - an incredible journey - loneliness and suffering and this is what he said:

Quote: "I'm not mad at the dog," Rowley joked. "All I want to ask him is, 'Why in the hell did you run off 10 years ago?'"

=============================================================================

Something not right here at all. The dog should stay with the people who found it.

Eureka I think he was just upset...When you love a dog and they do run off you wanna ask them this question. I have lost my sweet wishes gate was left open and zoommmmmm there she went, alas I didnt have a microchip in her. That is my fault, some dogs are runners/wanderers you all know this. Brindle did have a micro-chip that is saying something is it not?????

Does it matter really why it run off people this piss's me off my Dubbie did it and my heart still breaks I still have the calnder month on it for it was June 1 about 6:00 pm do you know I still look for him and cry over him. Be happy for these people. I love Dubbie but, he had a streak in him he would run every chance he got, my daughter never taught him no better. Sammie the one I have now loves his home and does not want to go no where unless I'm with him. Some people always have to rain on others happiness. I'm happy its alive. At least they know it and its healthy. Thank Gorilli Girl good news

I never expected this to become a huge story, and I'm happy that good news still sometimes gets the attention it deserves.
I've learned a lot over the last week-- last Monday, I was picking ticks off of a sleepy old dog, and by Friday I had to shut my phone off due to the amount of reporters that were calling. Most of the stories make it seem like the full, entire story has been told in the two minutes of video or in the 500 word article. Please keep in mind that there are dozens of emails and phone calls that will never be published, and the whole story is much more complex than the sound clips that are broadcast.
Please trust me when I say that Brindle IS going back to an owner that loves him very much, and can't wait to have him back. It really is a good, good story.

TY, Maria, I pray that Brindle has a wonderful rest of his life!!! I am sure that the Rohdes, especially Tristan, will get updates on Brindle too. After all, she found him, and brought him back into her home, so that he could be found, and get medical help. Thanks for this!!!

I'm leaning towards Eureka and Carrie. It made me uneasy by what the 'owner' said as well. I've seen too much animal abuse, I guess, and I'm not very trusting.

I am going to tell you all something on myself well sometimes when I come home I rush in the door head to the back for the ladies powder room wouldn't you know it the little guy in the pic my Doogman slides out and down the street. So It is easy and so many are wanting a cute little doggie. I do try today I made up my mind if the neighbors see my wet wet pee pant it is better than a lost dog. Thanks

Oh Amy, I bet he's just glad he again has help with the ticks and someone to hug and cuddle and rest his head and feed him regularly. But maybe he even had one or more folks like you inbetween where he wandered off again. I don't have any controversial feelings towards the original owners at all, one says a lot of stupid things when excited and also from own and friends' experience I know what journalists like to quote and what not and what they like to maybe twist a little for a catchy story.
I also know that dogs (other than cats) often like to wander off and sometimes easily get lost and also they are easy to be picked up by someone, happens here in the (more rural) neighborhood all the time. I know most of my neighbors' dogs, as do most folks here, and so if a dog runs off with the leash or pushes the back door open or sneaks out the back yard or any other circumstance they are 99% of the time found within the hour and returned home. They are just more likely to leave their familiar territory and also more likely to run into a stranger's arms, other than my or the neighbors' cats.
I'm just glad he's well and fine and you are a wonderful, caring human being!!

I think I need to add that when I say that dogs take off by pushing doors, suddenly chasing off while on the leash during a walk, etc. here in my neighborhood OFTEN I don't mean a few times a year but almost on a daily basis. So I know how fast that happens.

___"I'm just so proud of my daughter being so caring like she is, taking in the dog that was probably knocking on heaven's door," said Tristan's father, Jon Rohde.___

Dogs, Cats... birds too ... other FRIENDS OF SOMEONE... they do "get out".
It happens.
SAD too when the LOVED ONE can't find the FRIEND of FAMILY. Very.

I LOVE THE STORIES that TELL us ALL "Love Matters".

I have a riddle for you guys/ladies!

What has four legs and tried to sneak off after a squirrel while I was putting the trash out this morning?

I'll give you three guesses but I bet you'll only need one!

it is rare that a dog runs off in my area, but if one does it once he will probably be a repeat run-away. some are just really good at it, and we have to be smarter than them, for their own protection.

This is so heart warming & thank God for the young girl. I think all dog owner's know there're certain dogs that are runners. They will run out the first chance they get.I don't fault the owner's

Sheila, they don't run off for miles to never be seen again (or, that's not the norm). They see a squirrel (LOL, I'll take ONE guess, Amy!) , chase after, and as soon as they are a few hundred feet into the wrong direction, where they normally don't go for a walk, they get/feel lost, and because they are so trusting with humans they will walk into anybody's arms or car. They don't purposely run away. And you or the dog can be as smart as you want, they will still chase squirrels and you still look the other way for 2 seconds because the phone rang. It happens all the time and depending what kind of neighborhood you live and how well everybody knows eachother and how urban or rural it is is the outcome.
Cats rarely run into unfamiliar territory unless forced to, even when hunting, and if they do and are "lost" so to speak (although maybe only 500 ft away from home) they usually hide, and they even more rarely will run into a stranger's arms or jump into his vehicle voluntarily. If they show up somewhere wandering and lost, they were dumped. THAT also happens all the time.

Ulli and Gorilly-- How did you know??? You must be psychic!!!

I took him to the vet yesterday and he's feeling a better. He's also started eating like a horse... no, like a teenage boy!... now that we have started softening his food. Still, I know that there are a lot of problems he ended up with during his adventures that need medical attention-- from a hip that healed badly after being hit by a car to rotten teeth. There's been a charity fund set up for him... if anyone would like details on how to donate (I've been asked about it, but by no means do you have to! No pressure, y'all...) please contact me at amyDOTrohdeATgmailDOTcom and I'll be happy to give you more information!

Pets leaving their owners do happen even with the best of care & after years of it. I know of a family which had a dog walk in on it out of no where, stay around a decade or so,then leave the same way w/ no return,& no way of acting to note this might happen.

We knew that he'd be leaving as soon as we found out that he had his own "people". The difference between now and two Fridays ago when we found him is amazing, and Tristan and I are happy that we helped him to feel better.
But yeah, the whole family (not just me n' T) is definitely going to miss him. Brindle has been great, and he's taught us all a lot. There's a happy ending for him, but for millions of older, large breed dogs, the ending isn't so good. I think maybe we'll look into fostering large (...or senior, or both!) dogs in our area, so that they can have the same chance at happiness that Brindle has. I think that would fill that 70 lb, grey muzzled hole in our hearts quite nicely.
