THOUSANDS of pounds have been handed over to help an endangered species of bird survive in Calderdale. The tree sparrow is facing extinction - its numbers fell by 95 per cent between 1970 and 1998.

I have these wonderful birds visit my garden and nest nearby they have the distictive oval dark patch to the rear of the eye and share my garden with a multide of other birds including their relatives the Dunnock and the commom sparrow apart from cats, rats and humans their biggest predator is the sparrow hawk which frequently kills the smaller birds in my garden leaving clouds of feathers and in the case of the larger birds like collared doves the wings and skeleton! Many confuse the tree sparrow with the others of the sparrow fomily but his song and demeanour are different! Other sparrows have gender indicative plummage the tree sparrows are the same male and female like doves and owls, parrots etc Good to see them being helped in other parts of the UK!
