Do animals grieve over death like we do?

As anybody who has grieved inconsolably over the death of a loved one can attest, extended mourning is, in part, a perverse kind of optimism. Surely this bottomless, unwavering sorrow will amount to something, goes the tape loop. Surely if I keep it up long enough I'll accomplish my goal, and the person will stop being dead.

They absolutely do, and I've observed this first-hand in birds and there's not a doubt in my mind that when one of their own died or I was ill/injured, they clearly understood the situation and their behaviour illustrated their grief or concern.

I agree animals do mourn. Our two dogs that we got from the pound when they were puppies were inseparable. Sadly Ann was hit by a car one night about 8 years later and Dan would howl every night by the fence near that spot for about two weeks. It was heartbreaking.
