Violent acts towards animals have long been recognised as indicators of a dangerous psychopathology that does not confine itself to animals. 'Anyone who has accustomed himself to regard the life of any living creature as worthless is in danger of arriving

Urge your local school and state government to take cruelty to animals seriously. Laws must send a strong message that violence against any feeling creature—human or non-human—is unacceptable.

• Be aware of signs of neglect or abuse in children and animals. Take children seriously if they report animals’ being neglected or mistreated. Some children won’t talk about their own suffering but will talk about an animal’s.

• Don’t ignore even minor acts of cruelty to animals by children. Talk to the child and the child’s parents. If necessary, call a social worker.

i completly agree with this article i had a neighbor who i watched beat his dog shortly after i called humane society on him for what ever reason they left the dog in his care until it finally bit someone then a month later i noticed that child services was there and they asked me if i had seen him be rough with his children i told them i had not but i said i did see him hit his dog a few times to the point the dog was yulping needless to say they moved out rather quickly so i don't know what happened.

I make sure that all my representatives are against any and all forms of animal abuse and cruelty and check their voting records on Congress.org to check up on them.

ERIC S RESONSE FROM MY STATE OFFICAL DO THEY CARE?
Susan Collins

I appreciate your concern about the connection between animal cruelty and other forms of societal crimes. As noted in your correspondence, S. 2439 was introduced by Senator Menendez on December 10, 2007, and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee where it awaits further action. This legislation would require the Attorney General to modify the National Incident Based Reporting System, the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and the Law Enforcement National Data Exchange Program to list cruelty to animals as a separate offense category. I appreciate knowing of your support for this legislation and will keep your views in mind should it receive a vote on the Senate floor.

Sen.Libby Mitchell

Dear Susan:

The Maine Constitution does allow for a citizen initiated referendum to bring specific issues to the ballot. The Secretary of State can help you better understand the petition gathering process, but essentially, you will need to include the changes in the current law you would like, and then you would need to gather over 55,000 signatures to get this item placed on the ballot for a state wide vote. It is a bit of a daunting task, but there are many animal rights activists groups who might be interested and willing to help you out.

There are no current statutes that would allow the court to limit or ban persons convicted of animal cruelty to have contact with children. This issue has been brought forward in the past, but no bill has ever passed the full legislature that included this recommendation. There could be many reasons for this including increases in court and jail costs that cannot be covered by the fees alone.

Congressional Resolution on the Link

American Humane worked with U.S. Rep. Susan Davis (D-CA) on House Resolution 1046 to designate the month of September 2008 as National Link Awareness Month and draw attention to The Link between violence to people and violence to animals. Download the text of the resolution.

This is why it is SO imperative to raise
children to practice love, compassion,
respect and justice for ALL living things.
Every living thing on this planet is
connected. The sooner we all practice this,
the sooner we'll have a peaceful planet.
Thank you, Maria.

This article highlights a known, but ignored path from animal abuse to human abuse.Iain Brady ,the Moors Murderer, and Ted Bundy to name but two, both started with they're sick careers ,with the torture and killing of animals. The underlying pathology is the same in all cases, failure to feel empathy, emotionally stunted, delusions of omnipotence etc..these are manifested in acts of sadism, which often produce accompanying sexual gratification, for the perpetrator.
It is beleived, with much reason, that the future adult, can be seen in the child..and that it is possible, to spot these traits of psychopathy/sociopathy from infancy. Why is this not being fully followed up?before the pathology becomes irreversible? My own beleif is that the brains neural pathways and physiogomy, are partially formed by early childhood interactions..ie even the physical form, that the brain takes,is open to influence..particularly in the early years.
I don't accept the concept, that anyone is "born evil",but a child can become brutalised,by damaging childhood events. We have the means,to change this, through breaking cycles of abuse, spreading good parenting, and ensuring a safe and comfortable childhood for all children.
There would be a lot less psychopaths around,if we took these measures (im not saying that psychopathy, would dissapear but it would be reduced.People whose brain functions correspond to extreme personality disorder, are found in larger concentrations amongst the prison population.. and amongst corporate high flyers (I s*** you not)..
We seem to reward corporate psychopathy, and punish other sorts,i'd guess its that old class system again..
Tim you are right, being raised in an environment of love and understanding is the key-at the core,it really is as John Lennon said,'all you need is love"(and justice, fairness ,ending of the corporate dictaorship etc-but those things should flow from love anyway).
If we dont take care of each other as a society, then that lack of care, will come back and bite you ..

And I know no one here takes it that way as I've seen the concern for other species. But why is the take: Well if someone will harm/kill another species then the "step up" is to harm a human. A "step up" is not the dog, cat, bird, cow, horse etc etc 'someone also? In my world they are considered on the same level and humans should be dealt with harshly no matter what species they are bringing harm to.

Let us work that this time may come." ~ Albert Schweitzer, Alsatian Theologian, Musician, and Medical Missionary

"Take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented." ~ Elie Wiesel, Romanian-American Writer

"If a good relation with God makes people good and benevolent in their relation with animals, for its part, benevolence toward animals could awaken in man's heart feelings of admiration and praise for the grandiose work of the Creator of the Universe." ~ Marie Hendrickx, Theologian of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith

"Any glimpse into the life of an animal quickens our own and makes it so much the larger and better in every way." ~ John Muir, Environmentalist

"While we ourselves are the living graves of murdered beasts, how can we expect any ideal conditions on this earth?" ~ George Bernard Shaw, Irish Playwright and Critic

"We need another and a wiser and perhaps more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion. We patronize them [other animals] for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complete than ours, they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the sense we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren; they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of earth." ~ Henry Beston, The Outermost House

"The more that people live with animals, the more they know how precious they are and what they do to enhance our lives." ~ Doris Day, Actress, Animal Activist
"All that breathes is precious. Who is to say that the suffering of an animal is less worthy of solace than the pain of man? The spark of life is no dimmer simply because it is encased in fur or leather." ~ Anonymous

This needs to be taught in the school system - in case children are seeing this at home. This has been a long known fact - and the public is now becoming aware of it. We all need to watch for signs of this in our neighborhoods - AND THEN REPORT IT!!!

People who are violent to Animals, hurt us ALL. I AM glad that OUR collective conciousness is rising above that sort of sickness of the mind. It is OUR duty to try to help these people or not. Anyone without reverence for ALL life and actions , etc. that do not serve the highest and best good of US ALL will find that their lives will reflect their uncooperativeness to the rising of the new Age. The best WE can do is try to help OUR fellow brothers and sisters . Its about power with , not power over. I AM enjoying being alive at this time......Thx Maria

Violence is Violence and those who commit violence on animals. .usually do it to other Humans as well... although they say Hitler loved animals...? I believe when these patterns show up in small children, then slip through the cracks.. it can evolve into much bigger acts of crueulty...

response to Patricia McCaskill:

i feel exactly the same way as you. an animal's life is just as valuable as a person's, if not more so (for its innocence). they feel pain, thirst and hunger just as we do. many people feel superior to animals and feel they have the right to use their powers to lord it over the animal kingdom without legal recourse. that's why i'm on care2--to do what i can to stop these savages from their vicious witch hunts.

each one of us is a single drop of water but united we are a tidal wave!

Animal abuse is usually an early indicator of mental-illness. treat the ill-ness and end the cruelty. don't punish when you can prevent.

well what about the scientists and big pharma( monsanto for instance), what about the army and all the other life haters, they are surely most dangeous to all living creatures, to life itself actually, i am sure they are all mentally ill!!!

My ex-husband confessed to me about all kinds of things he did to animals when he was a kid and young adult. A couple of years later, he decided to pin me against the wall, and threaten to bash my head in. I decided to leave before the threat became a fact. I have no doubt that people who are cruel to animals have no value for any life at all.
