Animal welfare activists clashed with seal-pup hunters in Canada this week, just a few days into the annual sealing season. A commercial vessel rammed an inflatable boat filled with protesters over the weekend, and hunters threw seal guts. Animal rights g

This is makes me so sad and angry. The people that do this to a beautiful Seal are just monsters. How can they look at those precious faces and do something so mean? I would like to ask them that question? Where are their hearts? Veronica is right. PLEASE make a difference and join our group. Noted.:((((

Wow! what a horror story! Imagine just clubbing the poor seals! What are they? Inanimate things or what? Don't these poor creatures feel the pain? The sealers should understand that clubbing the seals just to make a quick buck is not ethical. In fact they should understand how it would feel if somebody had done the same thing to them. Thanks Arlette for sharing this information with us. I really feel for the poor seals! Noted!

Perhaps, clubbing them is a better option. This is so sad and barbaric. There can't be one ounce of humanity in these people. What goes around, WILL come around. And these certainly deserve what may be coming to them.

I do not understand how anyone could look into those sweet innocent eyes and use a club to destroy that beautiful helpless seal. These monsters then go home to their families and touch their children with those blood-stained hands. How do they sleep at night!!! How do they face themselves the morning after they have behaved so cold-bloodedly?
Noted with a heavy heart for the suffering, torture and murder of these precious, innocent, helpless seals.

As horrible as this sounds, I wonder how these hunters would feel if we threw their offspring out onto the ice and took a club to them? Or better yet, we take a club to the actual hunters. Makes me ashamed to admit I was born in Canada. There is NO reason to wear fur anymore, so this is just senseless killing. I hope karma catches up with each and every one of these brutal killers.

I'm with Maggi. The hunters should be clubbed to death and see how they like it! I'm so disgusted with the human race. No respect of the wondrous creatures who live here, the environment, the oceans, forests and skies.

None of these "options" are good ones. The killing is senseless; there is no need for humans to wear fur. People involved with these murders are barbarians. It's getting increasingly difficult for me to read these stories and hear about this 'news' and not turn into a raving luantic. Give *me* one of those clubs and let *me* do my own 'hunt' and I guarantee you I would come back with the remains of something but it would NOT be a seal...

I dont understand why people can be so inhumane to such precious and new life too - theres no need for it and it is absolutely horrible, and all these stories do get more difficult to read, and quite upsetting to hear about - I sincerely hope that we can all make enough of an impact to stop these barbaric happenings

We are getting closer to victory for the seals-- the fact that it is in the forefront of the news and is getting much more media is a victory -- The reduced demand for this blood fur is also a victory. We may not be done with the fight but face it we have come a long way for these poor creatures! Let's keep the hope alive that this archaic practice will soon be just a story of history.

It is hard to fathom that anyone is still wearing fur. It is so plain to see that killing animals for their fur is completely barbaric. The only purpose is vanity.
~Joaquin Phoenix

"There are times, and these not infrequent, when tears come to my eyes when I see, or read, or hear of the wretched plight of animals in the hands of humans. Their pain, their suffering, their loneliness, their innocence, their death. Anger. Rage. Pity. Sorrow. Disgust. The whole creation groans under the weight of the evil we humans visit upon these mute, powerless creatures. It is our hearts, not just our heads, that call for an end to it all, that demand of us that we overcome, for them, the habits and forces behind their systematic oppression. The fate of animals is in our hands. God grant we are equal to the task."
Tom Regan, 1938- In Defense of Animals

Hi, Oil M, you are exactly the type that would say something like that: your age, you need to mature a little, You sound exactly like my 30 year old son. No feelings, no sense, selfish to a T. I bet you are having trouble holding down a love relationship with a woman! But I am sure you are getting enough one night stands. Because of types like you this world is in such a mess. People that don't care for anything else, but themselves, you could not give a thought for a suffering animal, I am sure you are a macho meat eater as well, lots of meat, ham and bacon, Not a worry in the world, just make no 1 happy. Yuk, go to h.... or read Deepak Chopra' books, you really need them, if you want to grow up into a feeling , sensious being... good luck.

Are the sealers killing baby seals?

The Canadian government keeps insisting that only adult harp seals are killed. Yet, the following questions marked "#8 and #9" are taken verbatim from the DFO website:

8. How old must harp and hooded seals be before hunters can take them?
Harp seals can be legally hunted once they have moulted their white coat, which occurs at about 12-14 days of age. However, they are not usually hunted until they reach the "beater" stage of development at around 25 days old.

9. Why do hunters target young animals?
Young harp seals between approximately 3-4 weeks and one year of age are called beaters - so named because they tend to slap the water when they swim. Beater seals provide the most valuable pelts and market conditions are stronger for this type of pelt.

Twelve to fourteen days is not the definition of an adult seal. Nor is 25 days (which is three-four weeks). The seals from birth to four weeks old are helpless and cannot escape or defend themselves from their killers. These are seal pups. Seal pups are baby seals.

So when seal defenders state that the sealers are killing baby seals, what they mean is that sealers are killing baby seals

When the Canadian government states that the sealers kill only adult seals, they are redefining the meaning of baby seals. Baby seals cease to be baby seals and become adult seals at 12 days old according to the government definition. So when government and industry spokespeople say that the sealers are killing adult seals what they really mean is that sealers are killing baby seals

It sickens me that anyone would treat another living thing in such a horrifying, brutal manner. They can't call themselves human beings.Oh and by the way Oil M. why are you even on Care2? It's clearly obvious that you don't "care" about anything.

Oil M you are not only ignorant, you are equally arrogant to think that because man is the top of the food chain that he needs to destroy other creatures for his own selfish purposes. Way back in the day before fabrics and artifical furs could be created man needed to hunt for food and fur to eat and stay warm. Not so in today's industialized society. How anybody can look into the eyes of a beautiful baby seal and then wield a spike through it's skull and still sleep at night and feel good about themselves is beyond my comprehension. It turns my stomach and boils my blood. It is ignorant people like you who propigate this inhumane treatment of the other inhabitants of this Earth. Leave this website and do not show your face here. This place is for those who care about other creatures NOT those who defend those who killl the innocent and defenseless.

It is disgusting and sad what they do with these baby seals. I once saw a poster of an adult seal with a club in its flippers and a clubbed human baby beneath it ,dead. Such a powerful poster and the message it was conveying. I can't for the life of me see how one can hurt such beautiful creatures or any creature and live with him or herself.

Sadly noted.

Canada has one of the worst reputations in the world for treatment of animals, mainly because of the seal hunt. Our pathetic government cares nothing about the wildlife. Their excuse in the past has been the Native way of life that would be destroyed, when in reality it is the furriers on Spadina that profit. The only way to stop the hunt is to convince all these senseless women to quit buying fur, which makes for a really hard fight (which indeed has been going on for over 20 yrs). Arrogance, vanity and a conviction that only they hold any importance in this world is tough to overcome. Maybe all that botox will shorten their life span. We can only hope. And as for you Oil, I feel sorry for you. Your attitude is just plain sad.

Greed, selfishness and heartlessness. Boycott Canada. Don't travel there, don't buy their products.
I still for the life of me cannot even conceive what sort of being (because they are barely human) can actually take a club and beat a poor defenseless creature to death . . . it's beyond me, so barbaric and senseless. It needs to stop.

They also use fur seals for skiing, langlauf, or what ever it is called, they put seal fur strip on the underside of the skies, so they can get a better grip walking uphill.
The other thing that Canada is famous for is the way they treat pigs, one of the biggest exports. And huge cruelty going on there too. Or killing bears for the English queen's guard. Yes they still use real bears, that are cruelly trapped in Canada for the hats.

thanx arlette for posting & nadia & laura for mssg'n ... this is truly bad & sad & there is another factor that makes it BARBARIC EVIL & EXTREMELY SADISTIC& PERVERSE : In a FEW short MOS. (about 6 give or take) these seals will molt like a snake or a butterfly shedding its chrysalis/cocoon . about 30 years ago greenpeace pioneers (robert hunter {r.i.p}& paul watson {now w/ seashepherd})had proven that with NO HARM to the seals ,during the molting season , that the fur could be collected easier and w/ less trauma & effort ( for seals & humans ) than collecting wool from sheep..& could still be used for the same things and retain the same qualities as fur acquired by murdering & skinning the babies..

You people are all uneducated about the subject, I live in Newfoundland Labrador and the seal hunt is held anually, the ban on seal products in Europe is having a horrible affect on the fisherman and women who need the seals for economic stability. Oh and it's illegal to kill baby seals (The ones with the white coats as in the picture above.) The reality of this is that it's not inhumane, the club almost always kills them instantly. Have you people ever seen the way they kill cows, they line them up and slit their throats letting them bleed out, thats way more barbaric.

Jordan M. (0)
Tuesday June 30, 2009, 5:03 pm
I agree with Daulton B. Killing baby seals has been illegal since 1986. So before you so called "activists" go on a rampage about the seal industry make sure you get your facts straight. Also the club has been rated the most human way to kill an animal. As Daulton B. said about the cows and todays pigs are getting cutt by the throat and are left to bleed out too. And I can't stress how much you guys need to get your facts straight before you start talking. Also there are 8 million seals worldwide and the population is increasing. So . . . there you have it.
