It would have been a far more gracious gesture if the money had been donated to both Israel and Gaza. Lest we forget, Israel has been under siege by Hamas for eight long years and have suffered both emotional and structural damage too.

Oh Cheryl this is such wonderful news...thankyou so much. At last there is hope of some unification from other Arab countries. This is a very good sign.

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 19, 2009 (AFP) - Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz on Monday announced the donation of one billion dollars for the reconstruction of Gaza and called for putting an end to Arab differences.

"On behalf of the Saudi people, I declare the donation of one billion dollars for programmes to rebuild Gaza," the Saudi monarch said at the opening session of an Arab summit in Kuwait.

"We have to overcome Arab political differences that led to a division in the Arab ranks which can be exploited by those who want to achieve their regional ambitions" King Abdullah said.

He also warned that the Arab peace initiative "will not remain on the table forever."

Arab leaders are tipped to approve the setting up of a two-billion dollar fund for the reconstruction of Gaza.

Kuwait's ruler Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah announced at the summit's opening his country will donate all 34 million dollars needed by the UN relief agency for refugees, or UNRWA, for its Gaza Strip relief work.

Qatar last week suggested the setting up of a fund for Gaza and donated 250 million dollars.

The donations came a day after fighting stopped in Gaza between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas, allowing residents to survey the damage from the 22-day war.

Gaza medics said more than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed since the Israeli offensive was launched on December 27. The Jewish state has put its death toll at 13, including three civilians.

The U$A is expected to help rebuild Iraq after bombing it to smithereens; why isn't I$rael expected to rebuild Palestine?

I agree Pete,, ohters have made the same statement, the zionists should be paying. the USA gives $10,000. per person for each israeli EACH YEAR, plus war supplies.

Also regarding Hamas, they are elected, and as per another submission of mine regarding rthe gas fields off Gaza video I made on youtube and Elsie ED submitted an article I based it on and another souce, some one just reponded with a video on my channel now with another saying the same thing (Alfred Webre from BC in it, care2 member on my friends listthe israilis got very serious about caging in gaza after the gas was found.

there is more to it than that of course. Suggesting that israel get any money at all is for mass murder, war crimes and zionist ideology, is frightening.

this is occupied territory. If they would stay to the lines given them, instead they push for more and more land grabbing creating their own wars and retaliation.

I hope some peace can come with Hamas, and the Arab states, an hopefully Abbas/palenstine pulls his socks up as well. However with israel's stance, control, take, slaugher, I doubt it. clearly the bombing has to stop so does the concentration camps they ahve created, this are free people by god /allah

This i think...correct me if i am wrong but isn't it a good sign of solidarity with the Palestinians...they were abandoned by other Arab nations other than iraq and Jordan? Maybe these other Arab nations are finally getting pissed off with the USA backed israel?

read my last paragraph, then read, their statement, 'temporary' peace on the table, i think that means re' hamas, unfortunatly not israel. most of these arab states have strong ties with the USA, especially Saudi Arabia,

to me great news, i hope makes front page, but I don't think it will, there is so much coming and and much prmoted trhough people forwarding for themsevels to every one and then others for them on top of it. ok, just I can't do that, rare.

hugs

this obligation and commitement of all arab /muslim nations as they should claim support and supplies to gaza hence they couldn't do any thing to protect those innocents , gaza reconstruction exceeds approximately 6 billion dollars and sure arab countries will take the bill as they were watching and arguing beside their role will start now according to american /israel plans...." israel destroy and demolish the cities and arab weallthy countries start to rebuild and so on"

Thanks cheryl A dirty business altogether. will it ever change, well Obama is talking to Abbas (?) perhaps someone needs to advise him it was Mr Haniyeh who was elected so somehow it sounds like the same old overthrowing song (?) Dear Emad money generates money as long as it is moving -so any intial investment will be repaid many times over with rising costs inflation personal workers taxes ect ect.but i do not know what choice the people of Gaza now have - the place is a mess. Assalamu Alaikum

If there was any justice in this world those same troops that were part of the destruction should be disarmed and sent back to re-build what they have torn down...perhaps by listening to the stories of sacrifice and death, of ordinary Palestinian folk, of families rent asunder, they might become just a little more human and a little less filled by the hate jargon they are brought up on...while they are at it they can clean off all the slogans they painted on peoples walls in Gaza and learn to become responsible people...then like leaven in the cake they should go back to Israel and teach all they have learned to their leaders...what this world needs is compassion and love to stop all this cycle of hatred that only destroys.
