Nearly 500,000 dogs are killed for meat in the Philippines every year. Interestingly enough, the Animal Welfare Act was put into place in the Philippines in 1998, banning the slaughter of dogs for consumption purposes. However, it is clear that these laws

It says: Though the eating of dog-meat in the Philippines began as a religious, not a regular, practice.

Where's the petition for cow meat in America? I signed, but then again, a dog is no more important than a cow...

The choice of meats that human omnivores select is largely cultural. Some cultures eat cats, dogs, and horses, yet maintain taboos against eating either beef or pork. Here in the U.S., many people still eat beef and pork, yet are horrified that others think nothing of eating cat, dog, or horse meat. Regulation is largely ineffective in creating change. So long as the traditional cultural preference is for dog meat, many individuals will still choose that familiar flavor irrespective of the illegality of the product.

I signed, but I have to say that, from a vegetarian perspective, the difference between eating dog and, say, sheep is vanishingly small.

It's only a question of cultural background.

i agree, roger. as a vegan, i will say that an animal is an animal. a life is a life. this law must be enforced to save the dogs in the phillipines, but all animals labeled 'food' are just as important as any living being. we don't need meat to live, the animals' lives are taken away because of our 'hunger' for them.

As long as a culture believes it is OK to eat certain things, those animals will be on the "hit list". There must be a change in a mind set in order for change to take place. Japan is still whaling, there is still destruction of sharks for soup and dogs & cats will still be viewed as food in some parts of the world. We think nothing of how our farm animals are treated. We are just more horrified because we think of cats & dogs as pets. All animals deserve proper treatment.
