Hatchets Are Buried as the Chainsaws Fall Silent in Australian Native Forest

Environment  (tags: australia, victoria, conservation, forestry )

The last of the chainsaws are due to fall silent as the final licence to log in the Otways expires, ending years of bitter confrontations between loggers and conservationists in the native forest 100 miles south-west of Melbourne.

Question - they prevent these trees from becoming wood - where do they get the trees for wood? As long as population continues to explode, we need more wood, and it has to come from some forest.

The answer is stopping growth. I have no children, and plan on having one child and adopt.

Plant trees, plant life.

From my point of view, there are two issues here...
First is our levels of consumption, including that of fuel, including wood - and I'd have to agree that it's just commonsense that the more people there are, the more consumption there'll be and the less sustainable we'll be as a species (by the way, not sure if you read it, but I submitted an opinion piece about overpopulation a little while back: Are There Just Too Many People in the World?)
The other, more specific point here is that they're chopping down native forest that's teaming with indigenous flora and fauna - I can't speak for anywhere else, but from what I've seen here in Australia, any replanting that takes place takes the form of a monoculture that replenishes carbon, but has little if any value as an ecosystem.

There are pine plantations specifically grown for harvesting as fuel, the seedlings are planted each year so that each year there will be a new harvest, these plantations, hopefully, stop the necessity for touching our old growth forests.
