In Nigeria, where evangelical religious fervor is combined with a belief in sorcery & black magic, many thousands of children are being blamed for catastrophes, death and famine - and branded as witches, and then abandoned, tortured, starved and murdered

Their parents need to be educated on this. Children should not be treated like they are evil witches. I have signed petitions against this horrible act. I pray it ends soon. Sadly noted. Thanks Nick.

If Jesus were alive today, and saw the things being carried out in his name, he'd never stop throwing up. :(

I once saw a documentary on this, yes. Very upsetting. The delusional beliefs of some cultures. I wouldn't say that "civilization" or Christianity should intervene. There has been a very long and less than favorable history of such imposition.Still,it's quite disturbing...and all at the expense of children.

Thank you for this, Nick. Good to see you're still involved with Care2. Have a good weekend.

...and yes, it truly is despicable how Jesus' teachings have been twisted and manipulated throughout history....straight up to the present.

Like I've said in the article, for as long there is such a thing called religion, man will abuse it. Learn the fact that all religions are false regardless of which one. The sooner people accept this fact, the sooner all excuse to cause such atrocities can end. Until that day comes, this evil done in the name of religion will remain, and WILL continue forever...

What an atrocity! I agree with you Nick. As long as there is religion (& any mysticism if that is the correct word) people will commit these horrible acts in the name of it. It is so frustrating! What happened to "do unto others?"

I don't agree with this statement:"For as long there is such a thing called religion, man will abuse it. Learn the fact that all religions are false regardless of which one."
All religions are Not false. Granted, there have been and still are numerous atrocities committed in the name of religion and it sickens me, yet I believe in my Lord and when He returns to reclaim earth from the devil, who now rules, we will know peace and love.

Humans have used religion to feed their greed and addiction for power its true but they have used science in the same way. I may not agree with your philosophy Nick but this is revolting to say the least and i totally support you in bringing it to light . I am fwd it to everyone I know and asking them to do the same. Any real Christian will want to see this ended. I will not say god bless you;-} bit will keep these children in my prayers.

That's good enough for me, Kim. We can agree to disagree and still get along...

BTW, I hope other Christians who claim to be "real" Christians do take extra initiative to work on this problem as well...

People claiming to be Christians once condemned innocent people as witches. Let's not forget that. There's an awful long history of hypocrisy surrounding religion. I'm neither an atheist nor am I "religious". Spirituality....faith....that means different things to different people and no one has the right to impose their own upon another nor to condemn. That's what this is about and it has no place in this already all-too-troubled world. Thanks, Nick.

Based on what you said Debbie, here's a quote for ya...

"If all the Christians who have called other Christians 'not really Christian' were to vanish, there'd be no Christians left." ~ Anonymous (This formula applies to all religions)

All religion, my friend, is simply evolved out of fraud, fear, greed, imagination, and poetry. ~Edgar Allen Poe

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. ~Dalai Lama

:::sighs::: Okay...This is starting to give me a headache....Off to work I go. Know thyself, people. That's all I can say. To thine own self, be true.
