Patricia,
Taking milk from a cow is cruel even if it’s “humane” many fall for the humane myth, A cow is not supposed to produce milk for 5 years and then be killed it is bred its young does not get the milk meant for it but is instead taken away before it gets even a suckle and killed for veal. Its mother is then out through the unethical and unnatural process of milking every day for longer than it’s young would take it, as it would naturally be weaned sooner, this cause ulcers and such like on the cows breast inside and out, and much pain and distress, no matter how it is milled. It is then killed at 5 years old when it was meant to live to be 20.

You speak words of wisdom and great compassion, MeowFowl. Former "humane" farmers and even a mega-cattle rancher (Howard Lyman) echo your sentiments and explain why they walked away from believing in and accepting the "humane" myth in the POWERFUL film The Peaceable Kingdom.

It is too easy for us to "settle" for less, which is what the "humane" labels are, plain and simple. Realistically, it is a confusing message. I say either be a full part of the solution, or continue to be a part of the problem. Don't support the industry. The moment we settle and expect "less", that is exactly what we will get. Better to stand strong, learn and teach respect for ALL animals, tolerate NO killing and exploitation, and send THAT message out over and over. Don't waiver, for that is just what the industries that makes their living off of animals want you to do.

There is no "humane" road to the kill lines.

A very fair point Jozette, many fall for the humane myth. I'm just hoping if a law like this we could use it to a good point where maybe get farms shut down for abuse, if they continue to parctice what woud be classed as animal cruelty.

Rennet (enzyme) stolen from the 4th stomach of killed VEAL calves is used to curdle the (milk) curds and whey to make CHEESE. When I found this and other "vegetarian" atrocities out, I went from Vegetarian to Vegan all the way. No longer will I be a willing part of the mindset that "animals are for our use"; there remains no more excuses for me to do so. I choose NOT to spend another cent on the process of keeping any animal captive and then eventually killing it for $, just for my benefit.

Waiting for laws to change our mindset is putting the responsibilty in the wrong hands. It is up to us as individuals to become MINDFUL, act in accordance with our thoughts, and change the world into what we want it to become.

MeowFoul B. (191)
Monday June 28, 2010, 1:24 pm
Another well said peice Victoria, may i just pull you up on one thing "eventually killing it for $, just for my benefit." your last line, many people fall for it thinking dead animals and dairy is a benifit it is totally unhealthy and not good for them as much as they have been fooled to think it is. I am very glad you made the right choice :)

MeowFoul B. (191)
Monday June 28, 2010, 1:50 pm
Sunny, when you think about it, the people who consume meat AND dairy are just as responsible for this abuse, they pay money into it and eat with support, thats the blunt truth.

Read, noted & signed petition. Thanks MeowFoul. I am slowly making humane food choices available for myself & my family. Everytime I even think of meats or dairy products, I see the animal faces that go with them, &, yes, I'm even "guilty" of putting my family on a guilt trip when they consume those products, whether it's meat or dairy!!(P.S.also, some of our friends, in a "nice" way!)

Thank you for your educative efforts, MeowFoul B.
I can certainly pick up on your sense of urgency.
You are indeed correct in saying that we have been fooled into thinking we benefit from animal products. If the efforts we put into maintaining those types of products were instead put into something constructive (i.e. non-GMO plant-based) versus destructive (i.e. killing and bloodshed), one could only imagine what a different world it would be.

;-)

Monday June 28, 2010, 2:31 pm
Thank you Valerie for your comment on my post, it may seem like you are guilt tripping your fami,y when you go shoving veganism down someones throat it doesnt work, when I ate meat this was done to me, it didnt work, but educatiing is a different story and giving the blunt truth that the consumer of meat OR dairy is supporting such cruelty that takes place every day just like it did on Clonkin Dairy Fram is education not guilt trpping, if people feel guilt from being told that they should listen the the voice inside their head, ask their selves a question, why are they feeling guilt, for an innocent "man" does not feel guilt.

Jo Balltes (44)

Absolutely attrocious, disgusting, inexcusable and cruel...I feel so powerless to do all that is necessary to stop this but have not eaten or drank dairy for years and have become a veggie now. Those poor animals... :(
I just can't beleive some so called humans can be so cruel. What gives us the right in this planet to be the 'bosses' and be allowed to torture and kill animals for food, skins and such? The more people are informed the more that people will vote with their feet and not consume animal products.

Patricia C. (96)

# 278, very glad to sign and thank you. I absolutely agree with you MeowFoul B., trying to guilt people into changing their choices does not work, it just makes them mad and defensive. While I understand the passion behind a more cruelty free diet, some people tend to forget that they were once just like those they are attacking. The changes people around me have made is due to listening to me when asked why I have made the decisions I have.

MeowFoul B. (191)
Monday June 28, 2010, 3:45 pm
You are right Patricia, over 99% of the worlds population were brought up on a meat and/or daiy baused diet. hen we turn vegan we cannot forget what we once were. Anyone who consumes dairy or meat has got blood on their hands, and even turning vegan will not wash away that blood, you are forever stanied with it.

They should at least be put away for awhile, give them time to think about how evil they have been. Mel D,
Thanks for the Conklin Farm phone number. I do plan to call and voice my disdain, several times.

Unfortunately, I am allergic to soy and rice, so I haven't been able to go completely vegan. I do make my own almond milk tho (store-bought milk uses rice as a sweetener). But I have never seen butter, cheese or ice cream that doesn't have dairy, soy or rice in it. So I have to stick to a tiny bit of dairy until something better comes along.
But I signed and noted this. My heart is in the right place. My body just won't cooperate (giggle).

yes Henriette, as soon as the message "gets through" and we become vegan we may no longer need disgusting videos as they have done their job. Others however that shy away need to face the truth and stop pretending it isn;t real. I advise all non vegans, (including vegetarans) to face up to the "music" watch the vidoe, this abuse was on a daity farm not a meat farm, then ask yoursef if you really care about animal if you do, you will go vregan, or at least consider it.

MeowFoul - "over 99% of the worlds population were brought up on a meat and/or daiy baused diet"

Not quite accurate, actually. All hindus, all siks and many buddhists are vegetarian or even vegan! This amounts to very many millions of humans who have never, in their entire life, eaten any kind of meat.

Anna actually...
Though vegetarianism is associated with Hinduism, it is not true that even a majority of Hindus are vegetarian, nor is it a condition of Hinduism to be a vegetarian. In fact, it is stated in the “Manusmriti” (5:56), “There is no sin in eating meat… but abstention brings great rewards.” So, one cannot state, “I am a vegetarian because I am a Hindu.” Stating this may also imply that all Hindus are vegetarian, which is not true.
The First Precept admonishes us to refrain from killing, but meat eating is not regarded as an instance of killing, and it is not forbidden in the scriptures. (We are speaking here mainly of the Pali scriptures. Some of the Mahayana scriptures, notably the Lankavatara Sutra, take a strong position in favor of vegetarianism. Also see Note below)

As recorded in the Pali scriptures, the Buddha did not prohibit consumption of meat, even by monks. In fact, he explicitly rejected a suggestion from Devadatta to do so. In modern Theravada societies, a bhikkhu who adheres to vegetarianism to impress others with his superior spirituality may be committing an infringement of the monastic rules. The general consensus is that Sikhs are free to choose whether to adopt a vegetarian diet.[1] Orthodox Sikhs[2] believe that once Amrit is taken, Sikhs are only prohibited from eating Kutha or ritually-slaughtered (Halal, Kosher) meat.

Dear Change.org,

I have been in touch with you several times over the last year and asked you to open petitions such as this, whose outcome will impact practices and procedures world wide, for everyone to sign. I can't see why people from other countries cannot also lobby your government and visa versa, to incite change in these vital issues? Unfortunately I never received a reply, not to any of my requests and the petitions remain open to US citizens only. Since the petitions are set up to be sent to specific representatives, why can an extra 'non US' section not be made available for signatures and be sent to say, your president...or the govenor of California :o)) ? I want to add my voice to that of the many wonderful Amercians who demand change. The more signatures the better, right?

faithfully,
Charmaine

It is horribly, outright, absolutely stupid, idiotic to torture animials for
the gluttonous, greedy, selfish appetites of apathetic humans.IT MUST BE
STOPPED FOR IT IS NOT NECESSARY AT ALL.I HARDLY EVER EAT MEAT AND I AM FINE.
MOTHER NATURE IS BEGINNING TO DO HER RIGHTFUL JOB MORE AND MORE NOW WITH
HER HURRICANES, ETC., TRYING TO PUT SENSE AND EMPATHY INTO THEIR SOULS. I
have been caring for animals for eighteen years now and I have never been
sick, not even a simple tiny cold. I just ask The Good Creator if he could
possibly keep up my strength to care for them... and so it has been.GOD

It's sad that activism is required for this. Some people feel that animals are property, therefore they have no "rights". It's a religious thing. The congressman from IL-19 "preaches" that message to everyone via the Bible. Naturally he's on the House subcommittee that controls animal welfare legislation. Now you know why the legislation needed to add the bittering agent to antifreeze goes nowhere fast.

We can't allow this to happen to animals on farms because it will also have a negative effect on humans as well. If we are mistreating our sources of food and pumping them with chemicals or neglecting them of valuable nutrients, then the human beings being marketed that food are going to have to face the same repercussions.

I pledge allegiance to those forces that want to change this cruelty, and to the flag that they carry,And to the constitution that they erect,And I want to join this republic as it stands. We the people want to establish justice and domestic tranquility between ourselves and the animal kingdom because it is honorable and it is just . It is sickening to treat farm animals like that. We and the Federal Government should make Farm Aminals Cruelity Felony a reality. Same is needed for other animals.

Past Member (0)
Saturday July 3, 2010, 8:38 am
This is the argument for small farms.
Smaller farm populations lend themselves to better treatment of animals and more sensitivity to the quality of all farm products.
When a huge industrial farm is only meeting their bottom line, there is no focus on quality of environment.
Animals and people are not machines despite the efforts of corporations (which are not people) to treat them as such.
This brings up an interesting potential conclusion:
Perhaps corporations should be considered "dangerous animals" that will kill other animals and humans given the opportunity?
That is closer to the truth.

Deanna Zimmerman (74)
Saturday July 3, 2010, 9:33 am
"Perhaps corporations should be considered "dangerous animals" that will kill other animals and humans given the opportunity?"

I'm sure you just overlooked the fact that corporations HAVE been killing humans for decades. They ALWAYS have the chance, thanks to the legislators who put THEIR bottom dollar line ahead of the health of the citizens.

Hi Meow,

I have raised this issue in a few other threads and NEVER gotten an answer. So I'll raise it here and see what happens.

There are tribes in Africa who take their livestock out every morning, allowing them to graze in open fields, to their hearts content all day long, before taking them back to safety from wild animals for the night. This livestock can do whatever it wants all day long. The same happens for the chickens. How can this be called inhumane treatment of animals?

PLEASE show me proof that these tribes abuse their animals. Please prove that they terrorize their livestock before killing them. Please prove to me that the chickens are fed hormones and antibiotics, so much so that they can't take more than a couple of steps before collapsing under their own unnaturally gained weight. Please prove to me that they all kill the male chicks and toss them away. I’ve never heard of African tribes wasting ANYTHING, including life.

Please prove to me that what I have seen in the videos of African tribes is all a lie and that there are truly no humane farms in the entire world (as humane as they can be for eating meat to sustain their own health).

Thanks.

near the same as "organiuc farms" in the end they are killed, that creates pain, that is inhumae, they are used- inhumae too, they have milk taken from them, inhuame because of how it is done, no animal's milk belongs to us. this is proabaly going to be anotjher agree to disagree, i can sense it alreday.

Deanna Zimmerman (74)
Saturday July 3, 2010, 11:27 am
LOL, Ok. But let me try to assure you of one thing. The reason the Old Testement laws for killing animals by cutting the juggularm,is because the animal is dead before the brain has a chance to register that the body has been cut. So there is no pain.
But the rest, I agree to disagree (grin).

Buddhist Prayer for Those Suffering in Factory Farms. Consider adopting a cruelty free diet and lifestyle - Go vegan for peace, for yourself, for all sentient beings and the environment. 55 billion animals suffer and die in factory farms / year. 90 percent of all animals killed for "food" today are raised in factory farms. Every sentient being is an individual, precious and possesses Buddha nature. Compassion is action - Speak out and be the change you wish to see in the world. For more info on how to adopt a vegan diet & cruelty free diet - VeganOutreach - http://www.veganoutreach.org, http://www.veganyumyum.com "For as long as space endures And for as long as living beings remain Until then may I too abide To dispel the misery of the world." Shantideva - 8th C Buddhist saint
May the merit of this work be dedicated to all the orphans of the world.
May all beings be free from suffering

Prayer for Liberation of Brother and Sister Animals.

May all sentient beings in the animal realm
subject to unbearable pain in labs throughout the world
be free from suffering.
May alternatives to animal experimentation and testing
be used immediately.
May Bodhicitta fill the hearts of those who imprison them.

May all sentient beings from the animal realm
who suffer endless days, months, years
locked in tiny cages unable to move, be
filled with peace and calm.
May the many billions waiting in slaughterhouse
lines be free of fear.
May the hearts of those who work in abattoirs
be filled with Bodhicitta so the very thought of harm is purified.
May they never kill again and may the slaughterhouse lines become immediately empty.

May no animal be afraid or depressed.
May their bodies be free of injuries, disease and illness.
May those who need homes, or who have been driven from them
find shelter, plentiful food & water.
May there be liberation for those
tortured for fur, entertainment or who are hunted.

May those who believe they are superior
to our brother & sister animals
develop perfect equanimity.
And may they realise in their hearts
that all sentient beings possess Buddha nature
And they are not ours to kill or exploit.

May the many billions of land and sea dwelling sentient beings
who are abused, exploited and killed due to greed, hatred and ignorance
be free of suffering
May they experience complete and perfect enlightenment,
through the virtue of my efforts and prayers.
May I be a voice for the voiceless.
In short, may all human and non-human sentient beings
live together in harmony, peace and equanimity

Meow, even tho the following isn't about abolishing the eating of eggs, I thought you might like this form letter I got from Arnold Schwarzenegger's office this morning.

==========
Thank you for writing to express your support for Assembly Bill 1437. Taking the time to communicate your views is essential to good citizenship and good government.

After extensive consideration of arguments from both supporters and opponents of this issue, I am pleased to inform you that I signed this bill. This bill would prohibit the sale in California of a shelled egg for human consumption if it violates the provisions of Proposition 2, which was passed by voters in November 2008. The voters' overwhelming approval of Proposition 2 demonstrated their strong support for the humane treatment of egg-producing hens in California. By ensuring that all eggs sold in California meet the requirements of Proposition 2, this bill is good for both California egg producers and animal welfare. You may read the final language of this bill on the Official California Legislative Information website at www.leginfo.ca.gov.

Again, thank you for voicing your opinion on this important issue. I value your suggestions on how government can better serve the people of our state.

Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger
==========

Basically what Proposition 2 states (passed in 2008) is that all farm animals must have room to move naturally without having to touch another animal or the sides of the cages they are in. So, hens are able to stand, turn around, and even stretch out their wings without touching another animal or the cage they are in.

This new bill that the governor signed means that eggs sold in CA from other states must meet CA standards for the living conditions of their hens.

It isn't what you want to hear for the final result, but it's a most wonderful step in the right direction for treating animals humanely. These laws are enforced for factory farms, too. WooHoo!
