After many years of negotiations and partnership, the Government of Manitoba sent notice to three Aboriginal Governments that they intend to walk away from the process and cease any further discussions. "I am outraged..." Grand Chief Dr. Sydney Garrioch

I find this a little scary and makes me wonder if negotiations aren't really just a time buying process... What other options do we have? This is simply ridiculous, we as a people just want to move forward in a positive way, why are we still going through things like this? I have also noticed more and more "news" about mining deals and other negotiations on natural resources, they seem more like propaganda than anything else. In my opinion that isn't the way to go but try and say that to a people who have been deprived of everything from one generation to the next? The only people who REALLY benefit are the ones on top, not the little guy who just wants to feed his family and certainly not the land on which this is happening. There's a billion ways to make money and tearing up the earth really isn't necessary.

Right now in Ontario, a Chief and Council are sitting in jail because they were trying to defend their constitutional rights, the Ontario government gave a license to a mining exploration company without consulting and accommodating the concerns of the people there. So as you are reading this, these guys are in jail right now. Here's a link about this:

Thanks for this story Michael.

Scott - it appears the Canadians pushed "their" indians the same way americans pushed "our" indians as we expanded into the american west.

It is truly horribe. What is wrong with man that we think we can push another race or culture into almost extintion?

Noted thank you Michael, and so the governments go hand in hand with big business to sodomize the Original Owners of North America. I find the small reperrations are just a salve for the wound. If I had any say I would suggest the oringinal promise be honoured.

Obviously 99% of people find this just plain wrong but why does it endure? The people who can make the most positive changes seem to be content with the way things are regardless of the people or the environment; it doesn’t make much sense which ever way I look at it.

This is heartbreaking, they just abandoned negotiations? I am surprised they bothered at all with this attitude. The truth is, they have the power and they just don't care. Yes, it is the same here in America. This America, where everyone runs to flee oppression, this most bigoted country, has become one of the worlds leaders in oppression. It has been this way from the first days of the pilgrims. This America has become it's own urban legend. Where is a truly righteous and free country?

It appears the Manitoba government has dishonored their agreement; a common event for governments who have another agenda in mind when it comes to the First People of any country. The Chief and the Council needs to make this public on a global level, especially if the agreement was in writing. I believe that All Native tribes, as individual and separate Nations unto themselves, have a "Sovereign" right to govern their people, their lands, their welfare and well being; however, modern politics to not acknowledge them as a "nation within a nation," no matter where you go in the world today. That right needs to be addressed, acknowledged and accorded each tribal entity, no matter who they are. Once accomplished, it will give them an opportunity to be a Voice on a Global level.
