I heard this story earlier today and I wrote "My God what an idiot! What a complete idiot! An absolute idiot.

Noted, I hate to admit that I am from Missouri. The man is an idiot, but here in MO we have lots of 1 issue voters who would vote for the devil if he was opposed to abortion. Adkin is opposed to social security, medicare, student loans, food stamps, unemployment, and his last stand was his attempt to stop school lunches for hungry children. See, he wants them to be born, but then he wants them to be uneducated and starved. That's Todd Akin, The Tea Partier with MO Values. See why I am ashamed.

i understood him to mean a woman who claims rape falsely. however, i immediately wondered if he would somehow use those false claims to deny abortions to legitimate rape victims who simply could not prove their case. and voila... the co-sponsorship of that bill.

Well thank you Patrick - it's the first I heard of it, and I'll take a moment to rant. I had a conversation the other day with a pro-lifer about pro-life, and I can respect those who are pro-life if pro-life means that they do not beleive in the military, or killing and eating animals, etc...if pro-life meant to them that all life is sacred including a 10 week fetus. Ok, I respect that - so don't you have an abortion ! But none of these politicians - not one of them ! Give a flying crap about the sacredness of life. - this is all about CONTROL - keeping women slaves, impoversished, at the mercy of their bodies. I am not surprised by this idiot - and it doesn't matter what idiotic garbage spews out of their mouths because most of them are going to stick their stupid foot in it sooner or later. What's absolutely galling is legislators want to tell women when they think it's appropriate (or not appropriate )to have an abortion. Sick to death of this. A women should never have to explain why she's having an abortion. It doesn't matter why ! ! !

Perhaps someone needs to take him aside and explain how 'the birds and bees' thing works...sperm...egg...mix the two and there's no 'shut'n down' what takes place next. What a neandertal this puke is. And what the hell is 'legimate rape' for starters...as his explanation makes zero sense, at least not to myself.

Is this man a complete imbecile or pretending to be one because it suits him to do so? Are we supposed to stomach these comments and accept them as normal? Do they really think that we are all mentally challenged? Men like him in positions of authority easily explains why the world is in such a mess.

Must say I am enjoying the comments that are posted so far!

I think Calliope may be on to something here. Yes, it does suit him. The Republicans/TeaPartiers know that there are many fools out there, (just look how the TP extremism caught on), and have determined that it very well could be that there are enough fools in this country of apathy who WILL vote for at least one of their extremist, bigoted, racist, elitist, or anti-woman platforms. This allows the extremists to find a Politician/Voter that has the same mentality as they do. They serve each others' interests. I hope all the "people" exercise their duty to vote in this election, because I just CAN'T believe that the "majority" of Americans are that stupid, blind and hateful to vote for some of the garbage we have to choose from.

I don't dare test my heart by checking to hear what this POS has to say about gay marriage or global warming.
This is even more ignorant than the "rape insurance" .. ("i carry a spare tire in my car" / "i have car insurance") BS from earlier this year.
No one, especially senile old men should be debating or have any say in a woman's body. period!

For the many women who do not report rape and only rarely discuss it with a very trusted friend, this is why. I saw this interview clip last night which was followed by one of the worst retractions of late. The problem is not that he spoke to quickly to answer the reporter, the problem is that he spoke at all.

What a surprise, he hasn't the first clue about female anatomy, and what has become a BIG selling point lately, actual rape is rare. No, rape is common, it may not be reported, but I would guess that I am not the only woman that others have shared their stories with.

In a continued effort to force their personal agenda on all of us, near illiterates like this dimwit, try to use rape as tool for their anti-abortion agenda.

What makes me most angry is that women buy into this stupid, political rhetoric. You have rights, stop listening to these MEN, and stand up for yourself. You did not ASK to be raped, you and only you can decide whether or not you want to carry a child of rape to full term or have an abortion. Neither god, nor Jesus nor any bible speaks to the issue of abortion - stop listening to these bonehead, ignoramuses, and make your own decisions about your own body. Rape is real, there is no grey line.

"If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." I wonder who serves as this goofball's medical advisor? Is Todd Akin really that misinformed, or downright stupid, or is he simply trying to justify his anti-abortion stance by uttering nonsense when put on the spot because he doesn't have a reasonable answer?

Does this "legitimate" rape result in a "legitimate" child --as opposed to consensual sex between unmarried couples resulting in an "illegitimate" child? Is this insanity, or is my recent injury causing the intense throbbing I'm feeling in my head? If any women in Missouri vote for this man, they deserve him.The look on the face of the woman standing behind him says it all!

Hmmm.... I posted a link to a petition moments after posting my initial comment to this article and I checked to make sure that it appeared --and it did. When I returned to the page, my comment was gone, so I'll make another attempt to post it.

Speaker John Boehner is being petitioned to remove Todd Akin from the House Science and Technology Committee due, undoubtedly, to his ignorance and incompetence in that area. If anyone is interested in signing that petition, please click on the following link to access it: PETITION: Remove Todd Akin from the Science Committee

The article that introduces the petition can be accessed at Speaker Boehner needs to remove Akin from Science and Tech Committee

HOW IN THE WORLD DID HE MANAGE TO GET HIMSELF ON THAT COMMITTEE?

PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE WITH INTERESTED PARTIES! THANK YOU!

lately I get more and more the feeling that my English is degenerating. Than again in Holland we had sort of idiot conversations, hmmm useless talk. Though we're more practical here and just choose again when it doesn't work, none has spoken yet, we've heard enough this year. It would be a real joke if these people didn't cost so much money getting all this time to blabber rubbish. Well, Akin sure made a goof of amazing dimensions when he used the words "legitimate rape" to describe what he no doubt meant as "REAL rape", as opposed to lying about rape;

which, you know, is what most women who want abortions will do -- especially if those "exceptions" are allowed for rape and incest! 'Cause it's easier to fake claims of rape, than to fake claims of incest! {I hope you realize I am being IRONIC here -- unfortunately, that's NOT FUNNY, it's the way the Rethugs REALLY DO THINK.}

The idea that "a woman can't get pregnant, unless she enjoys it; therefore, if she got pregnant, she enjoyed it; and if she enjoyed it, she asked for it; and if she enjoyed it, it wasn't rape"; was good Catholic doctrine in Catholic law courts in the Middle Ages. Also, if the woman didn't RESIST, or didn't resist ENOUGH, then she enjoyed it, then it wasn't Rape. {This idea is also spelled out in the Bible.}
ANYthing to get the guy off the hook! who was often a clergyman.....
The idea of the Catholic Church was, that woman was by Nature, sinful {MORE than men!} -- because Eve and the Apple! bringing Sin into the world, was EVE's fault! Women LOVED sex, and were always TEMPTING men, Pure Men, to SIN -- by their very EXISTENCE!
[It is a VICTORIAN idea, not medieval Catholic theological doctrine, that Women were "purer" and had to be protected from evil dirty Men. In the Middle Ages, it was the OPPOSITE -- Men had to be protected, by the Church and prayer, from evil, sinful, lustful WOMEN!]
Just thot I'd give some background here. As you can imagine, a woman in the Catholic Middle Ages who dared to accuse a man of Rape, was MORE LIKELY TO BE BURNED AS A WITCH, than to see her Rapist punished! [The only time this worked against the rapist, was when the woman was a daughter of a wealthy family who hoped to gain more wealth or status by her marriage.]
If the woman resisted enough to DIE, THEN she was considered to have resisted "hard enough" and it was proof of her "innocence" and that she wasn't in fact the Evil Temptress that caused the sexual experience.
Unfortunately, however, the "innocent" party had to be DEAD....

Petitions signed.

Akin needs to be removed from office and from the Science and Technology committee.
Akin obviously does not understand how a woman's body works. Akin needs to have both
male and female reproductive professionals teach this imbecile reproductiion.

Akin needs to apologize to women everywhere.

There is no such thing as "legitimate rape" anywhere on earth.

The women in the state of Missouri must get this ?man? Out of office in the upcoming election.

The women in Missuori should vote for a female, a woman candidate, a democrat for office.

This state, Missouri, must get over themselves about race.

Racism is morally wrong as is rape.

I have already signed about ten petitions about this, Some really great comments on here, When I first heard this I could not believe my ears and then I remembered that he was a republican, What a totally stupid thing for him to say, legitimate rape what in the hell is this no rape is legitimate, This moron should be thrown out of office, They all pretend to care about being pro life and don't give a hoot after the child is born, Any woman that would vote for these pro lifers are insane, No man or even another woman has the right to tell a woman what to do with her own body.

I'm sick of the whiny financial BS b/t reps & dems. Only a fool thinks democrats aren't just as filthy rich as reps &/or that they possibly care about anything other than power & $. I'm sick that no one thinks our national debt should be prioritized- bad enough we can't pay it back, but continuing into debt? And yeah, repeal the Bush tax cuts- it won't do squat to repay $15T but it will hurt the middle & lower class more than rich. Of course, eveyone wants someone else to pay more as long as it's not them. Idiots! This entitlement society is bringing us to our knees. But, SS & medicare, etc, shouldn't be called "entitlements." They were paid into for over lifetime ofwork & then stolen from by politicians! And then idiots like this- how can anyone spout such STUPID, FANATICAL, IDIOTIC, BORDERLINE-RETARDED nonsense!? I'm sure he'd feel different if it were HIS wife, daugher, sister, etc! And wtf's "illegitimate" anyway? RAPE IS RAPE! But I DO agree w/him about the "child" suffering. So, abort the fetus- then there won't be a child TO suffer being forced into this world, a rape baby. This 2-party system is a joke. BOTH sides are ridiculous & hypocritical! Set a time limit on abortion- a few wks BEFORE viability- like 18wks, or even 16wks(?)- that's almost 4mo! With the only exception being that of the woman's life in jeopardy. A rape victim can decide w/in 18wks to abort, but EVERY hospital should be ready (& REQUIRED) to administer the morning after pill on demand. Nice & simple. I'll sign the petition...

Science and technology committee????You have got to be kidding me!? I will attend to signing that petition after my post here.I have made comments elsewhere about this morons comment. Ignorance in public office (and elsewhere) simply sends me into aghast mode...momentarily...then I feel angry and even more energized to ACT.I have worked with rape victims (the ones that dare to come forward and seek help) and unless the rape was very violent and by a stranger....the victims almost always started talking to me by blaming themselves. Now the national stats (and what I heard from the victims) show that the majority of rapes are perpetrated by someone the victim knows, not by a stranger. This fact adds to a victims reluctance to seek help because she is not sure she was raped????? Even though she intuitively knows, she did not want to sex with this person but then rape is all about power and control not sex.Yes, I do believe that women are blamed because Eve was said to set the standard. So now, (another misogynistic message is being sent to us) if we become pregnant as a result of such an intrusion....our bodies must have known that we wanted to become pregnant because it did not go into shut down mode....OMG....after writing this I feel like I just came off the tilt-a-whirl after being on it for a week.I am now going to the petition to oust this Yahoo..........great comments here. I cannot help but wonder..if there is a young woman somewhere....that might believe his dribble? Makes me want to dig in harder and deeper.............

For one, rape is rape. There is NO "legitimate" and "illegitimate" rape. Secondly, this is exactly why we rank so low in education. The right wing is rewriting science and history. Why is the GOP declaring war on women? Next to go is our vote and then their version of sharia law. Break out the burkas. Women are losing all constitutional rights. We are humans with (supposedly) inalienable rights. Hey GOP do you remember that thing called the Constitution - or just the parts that YOU want to remember?

At near 60 years of age I never thought we'd have to cover this territory again. These men and some of the women too, poor misguided ones, not only don't want the health insurance to pay for the contraception but they don't want you to be able to obtain or have contraception. This is the slow creep to women having no control over their bodies or lives.

They would have us back to the time when the only reason a woman had sex was to procreate, so therefore if the only time you have sex is to procreate why would one want to abort it or prevent it with birth control. Ya, I recall of those days and types of men, and obviously they still exist. Backed by their self righteousness they get from a book or just because they are men.

The men never went without, there was always the brothel in the town, and that poor woman had to suffer all of the indignities to "spare" those wives that had to only do it when "duty" called. A choice that was chosen by the man. Some men chose a lot of "duty"......my poor Irish Catholic Great Grandmother died at 46, tired and worn out with cancer in the uterus or cervix from all the Irish twins she bore, 22 children in all, not all to full term, not all lived to adults.

With this Quiverfull Movement that is being pushed down many women's throats, gee those glory days these idots would love to have back. Not all families are going to look so easy as the Duggars would have you believe. This is being pushed by the mostly all white congregation of some churches to offset the rise in those of darker skin color that have immigrated here. Oh, don't let them fool you, they will not say that is the reason, as with not abortions to save the life of the child while voting to go into war after war and allowing the women to die rather than giving her a life saving medical procedure.

Rape is rape, it is a crime. But I guess with the new rules in place, the women should be all home and pregnant, no outside jobs, no contact with others, so if she is out and about, I guess she is asking for it, therefore legit? Or if a husband forces himself on her, as long as he didn't beat the crap out of her, it isn't forced so is legit?

The cat is out of the bag ladies, and the men who love them, pay attention. The Platform of the Republican Party is to lead us to this direction, the return of the bad old days, of backroom butchers and more children then we can feed. At the same time cutting off or back the food stamps, taking away the little help in the medical care system we now have, and gee won't we have fun. How to make a 3rd world Country in 5 easy steps. All Petitions signed.

I hope people pay attention to Dandelion's last paragraph in her comment. This is the approved platform positiion for the Republican national campaign as of yesterday or the day before:

"The cat is out of the bag ladies, and the men who love them, pay attention. The Platform of the Republican Party is to lead us to this direction, the return of the bad old days, of backroom butchers and more children then we can feed. At the same time cutting off or back the food stamps, taking away the little help in the medical care system we now have, and gee won't we have fun. How to make a 3rd world Country in 5 easy steps."

Elllen- Who said I do ever get anything done? LOL! And thoughts represent thousands, sometimes millions of words in fractions of a second. If I could type all of the words out to complete the thought I just now had, it'd probably take you till spring to read it all. Of course, you'd give up after a few min or you definitely wouldn't get anything done :-)
