"Dana Blankenhorn at ZDNet argues that doctor resistance over online personal health records (PHRs) centers around their loss of control"

And that about sums up the truth of the matter...

Having worked in a hospital and being privy to some horribly botched operations/cover-ups thereof etc...(Not all due to failure to have patient medical records at hand, but some, no doubt)...The question of "the boys covering each others backs' entered my mind quite often...Same as that of patient/family rights...

It's a very closed society...My first day at work was preceeded with the signing of a form...A disclaimer that I would not reveal any information gleened in the course of my employment!

I still wonder what the relatives were told when their loved one died of gas gangrene following a simple operation removing of a couple of annoying varicose veins?

Get it ALL out in the open!...Cults not required...Patient rights must have priority over doctor's retirement funds

Thank you for an interesting post Jolly!...(Glad i did "have a look") :)

I HAVE A SEVERE MEDICAL CONDITION THAT I HAVE HAD FOR YEARS. 8 YEARS AGO, MY DOCTOR QUIT PRACTICING AND CLOSED HIS DOORS THERE WAS OTHER DOCTORS IN HIS OFFICE AND EVERY ONE MOVED OUT. I FOUND A NEW DOCTOR AND ASK FOR MY RECORDS TO BE TRANSFERED TO MY NEW DOCTOR. NO WHERE WERE MY RECORDS TO BE FOUND. 8 YEARS LATER AND STILL THEY HAVEN'T FOUND THEM. THEY BELIEVE WHEN THEY LOCKED THE DOOR TO THE BUILDING MY RECORDS WAS LEFT INSIDE AND THE MAN WHO OWNED THE BUILDING THREW THEM AWAY. THEY HAD TO START FROM SCRATCH. WITH A SEVERE MEDICAL CONDITION IT IS ROUGH. TO REMEMBER ALL THE MEDICINES YOU TOOK. WHEN THE ONSET OF THE ILLNESS HAPPENED. SO MUCH WAS LOST AND NOTHING COULD BE DONE. IF IT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE ELECTORNICALLY THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT AND BACKED UP ON PAPER FILES ALSO JUST IN CASE. IT IS ALWAYS GOOD TO KEEP A LIST OF MEDICINES YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO. YOU NEVER KNOW.

More good stuff, Jolly! I'm on the fence on this one. I can see where abuses can occur, and I can see how having a central location for all records makes it easier to transfer when a doctor retires or moves. Then there is the case of my dear 86 year old Mom. Her records are so thick it hard to know what is going on. But, I am an advocate of taking part in your own health care, so I keep the important stuff about my health care and my Moms in a small book. Dates, procedures, meds that work, meds that don't, and medication allergies. Still, they had trouble finding our blood work last time to the Doctors. Having it all electronically would also keep us from getting a medication we would be allergic too in an emergency. Still, the information has to be completely safe from hacking, and can never be used to deny someone a job, etc.
