Mission
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is dedicated to being the most
effective conservation organization, protecting and promoting a world
rich in wildlife and wilderness. For more than a century, WCS has inspired care for nature,
pioneered environmental education programs, and helped sustain biological
diversity. Throughout its rich history, WCS has remained an integral
part of New York City's cultural life and a leader in teaching biology
and science in both the U.S. and worldwide.
Programs
WCS manages more than 300 field
projects in 53 countries and has developed award-winning environmental
education programs for schools in the U.S. and abroad. At its celebrated
wildlife parks in New York - the Bronx Zoo, the New York Aquarium, and
Central Park, Queens and Prospect Park Wildlife Centers -- WCS inspires
over 4.5 million annual visitors to care about wildlife and wild lands
and to participate in their conservation.
WCS's staff of zoologists, keepers, teachers,
veterinarians, health technicians, trainers, and other specialists care
for more than 8,000 animals representing 1,000 species. Dedicated individuals
conduct a gallery of programs including conservation education, breeding
of endangered species, and understanding wildlife health and science.
WCS's International
Conservation program oversees field conservation projects in
Africa, Asia, Latin America, and North America. Here, WCS staff gathers information on
wildlife needs, trains local conservation professionals, and works with
in-country staff to protect and manage wildlife and wild areas for the
future.
