Latvia, Stop Destroying Your Forests

Due to the decline in the economy, the Latvian government is resorting to increased logging to bring in more revenue. According to Mongabay.com, the government has developed a new plan that allows logging companies to log astronomical amounts of forest at increased and unsustainable rates.

Many of these logging companies have a terrible reputation when it comes to the environment. For example; Latvijas Valsts Mezi (LVM), a state owned logging company, is known for damaging animal and plant species as the procedures they follow in the forests have destroyed precious and rare ecosystems.

Mongobay.com states that not only are the forests of Latvia home to many rare animals and plants, but the forests "protect the headwaters of the nation's rivers, prevent erosion, sequester carbon, and provide food, income, and fuel for rural Latvians."

These forests are clearly very important and essential to not only Latvia and Europe, but to the world. They protect rare and special animal and plant species and give Latvians a way to provide for and support their families. If Latvia continues to log 2 million cubic meters every year, the forests will be gone in 50 years or less.

Tell the government of Latvia to stop allowing such massive amounts of forest to be logged.

We the undersigned sincerely ask the government of Latvia to stop the massive amount of logging that is currently occurring. Logging 2 million cubic meters every year will only destroy the precious forests as well as the rare and valuable animal and plant species. Furthermore, many Latvian logging companies have a poor reputation when it comes to protecting the environment which greatly increases the chances of rare ecosystems being destroyed.

Please protect your precious forests by reducing the amount of meters you log every year because if you continue at this rate, you will have no forests left in less than 50 years.

Thank you.
