Tell Julia Gillard: No Nukes for India!

In a drastic policy reversal, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard is supporting the export of uranium to India, despite the fact that India has refused to sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

According to The Australian, members of Gillard's own ruling Labor party claim that the move "will allow atomic fuel to be diverted to weapons programs, encouraging nuclear proliferation in the region."

Gillard's decision will intensify the nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan, and help to weaken the international move towards non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Such weaknesses are already being exploited by China, which has announced plans to export nuclear reactors to Pakistan.

Tell Gillard that the nuclear age is over!  No more nukes!
We the undersigned ask that you reverse your recent decision to sell uranium to India.  India has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and is not committed to reducing its nuclear arsenal.  In fact, the opposite is true: with uranium exports increasing, India has entered an arms race with Pakistan, the consequences of which could be disastrous.

As Dr Jim Green has argued in The Canberra Times, this policy will do little to create jobs, is unlikely to help the environment, yet could be potentially disastrous.  Is an increase of nuclear weapons in the Indian subcontinent really worth such a small growth in uranium exports?

We urge you to reconsider this policy.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
