Demand Brazil treat street dogs humanely through a dog management program

Please sign and share this petition worldwide in an effort to encourage Brazil to treat the street dogs in their country in a more humane manner by possibly implementing special dog management programs for the health and safety of the dogs. We do not want these poor animals to endure the pain and demise at this time of the World Cup Events and beyond, like they did during the Sochi, Russia Olympics.

Many are concerned that the stray dogs roaming the streets of Brazil will meet a fatal end similar to the demise of so many canines in Sochi prior to the Olympics. With the onset of the World Cup in Brazil, animal welfare is accusing Brazil of such poor practices with the hopes of finding a better way to handle the stray dog conditions. Officials in Brazil deny the removal of animals has taken place but campaigners say eyewitness accounts of dogs being seized are genuine.

Humane Society International (HSI) is urging the mayor’s office in Recife, Brazil, to stop a plan of removal of the animals and instead put in place a humane street dog management program. In their written request, they ask that the street dog populations be humanely and effectively managed through sterilization and vaccination.

Long-term sterilization and vaccination are the only street dog management methods that effectively address the issue. HSI is working with and supporting the efforts and campaigns of local organizations in Brazil, including no-cost sterilization and vaccination services to individuals caring for street dogs, known in Brazil as community dogs.

Let us encourage Brazil to implement some type of dog management program as this so that we do not have a repeat of what occurred in Sochi with horrific consequences. Brazilian Government - With all the stray animals roaming your streets during the World Cup Event, please do not just catch them and euthanize them as a solution to the problem. We encourage you to work with the Humane Society International (HSI) and implement a dog management program, such as no-cost sterilization and vaccination services to individuals caring for street dogs. This and similar programs would help to keep the numbers down in a safer, more humane manner.
