Dead, found hanging by her neck from a choke collar. Her neck squeezed so tightly it was a bit larger than your thumb. This is not how you expect to find your animal after sending her to a doggy day care. But this is what happened to one traumatized couple who entrusted their dog into the care of Biscuits & Bath dog retreat.
Peanut, a three to four pound Yorshire Terrier, was killed by a choke collar while she was riding Biscuits and Bath's transportation shuttle.
Besides day care and boarding, dogs staying with Biscuits and Bath can get
manicures, hot oil treatments and organic lunches. It all seems lovely
at first glance -- who wouldn’t want that treatment for
themself. But the kennel's charm falls short with its
transportation service.
While the dogs are driven around,
they have on a double slip collar (also called a choke collar), which
tightens around the neck the harder it is pulled. This is all for your
peace of mind, of course. As it says on their website:
“Peace of mind means the security of two slip collars placed on each dog plus durable, double layer, double stitch nylon leashes clipped into a screw-lock carabiner on a waist belt.“ Knowing that my dog was subject to the torture of a slip collar would not give me peace of mind. It would give me nightmares.
This is in fact barbaric and cruel. Dogs can get anxious and scared while riding in a vehicle; they can run around the back of a van and get pulled from side to side. This is a recipe for disaster, and it needs to
stop. There are better options: Dogs could be transported in crates --
or a harness that fits around the chest and puts no pressure on the
neck.
I do not want what happened to Peanut to happen to anyone else’s pet. Let’s tell Biscuits and Bath they need to rethink their methods. We do not agree with how they are treating our pets. They need to change the way they transport our beloved animals.
