Tell the FDA to Regulate Toxic E-Cig Nicotine Now!

  • by: Lauren S

Electronic cigarettes, or "e-cigarettes," have become a popular alternative to tobacco cigarettes. But e-cigarettes are more dangerous than many consumers know.

In March 2014, the New York Times published an article on the dangers of e-cigarettes, particularly those that require a refill of liquid nicotine. Unlike other nicotine products like the patch or gum, e-cigarettes are currently unregulated. The FDA has stated it has plans to regulate e-cigarettes, but has not acted. There have been no studies done as to whether e-cigarettes work like nicotine patches, etc., nor has any research been done as to the health effects of e-cigarettes. If liquid nicotine is manufactured outside the US, retailers may not know what they're selling consumers.

In the meantime, hospitals around the country are reporting increased cases of nicotine poisonings. The New York Times article cites a case where a woman's plastic e-cigarette broke and she absorbed toxic amounts of nicotine through her skin. But many of the cases involve children who are poisoned when they drink liquid nicotine—which is often flavored like fruits or sweets. Many consumers do not seem to understand the toxicity of liquid nicotine, as there are currently no labeling requirements. But, in fact, one tablespoon of liquid nicotine is enough to kill an adult.

Sign this petition to urge quick action by the FDA to regulate e-cigarettes and keep America safe!

To the Comissioner of the FDA:

We write to urge you to take quick action on the regulation of e-cigarettes in the US. The industry is currently unregulated, resulting in a lack of manufacturing standards, labeling requirements, or child-proofing. Many consumers of these products are unaware of the incredible toxicity of liquid nicotine and there have been numerous reports around the country of children being poisoned by drinking the liquid. Furthermore, investigative work by the New York Times has revealed that nicotine imported from other countries may not accurately reflect what is being sold. The FDA has stated its intention to regulate e-cigarettes. We sign this petition to tell you that regulations cannot wait any longer.
