Washington Post: Reconsider Publishing Columnist Who Belittles Rape Victims

On June 6, The Washington Post published an opinion article by George F. Will entitled, "Colleges Become the Victims of Progressivism." The article implies that women seek out violence so they can claim attention-grabbing victim status, and that some women are responsible for sexual assault and rape because they date and hook up instead of getting married.

This opinion article is inflammatory and demeaning to women. Will's general point about the dangers of college drug and alcohol use and hookup culture might have some validity if he didn't put all the blame on women and talk down to them throughout the article.

While a newspaper opinion column should present all sides of an issue, Will's sexist tone is out of place in this day and age. Please sign the petition to urge The Washington Post to reconsider publishing articles of this nature in the future.

We are concerned about George F. Will's June 6 article, "Colleges become the victims of progressivism". As you know, the article implies that women seek out violence so they can claim attention-grabbing victim status, and that some women are responsible for sexual assault and rape because they date and hook up instead of getting married.

We respectfully urge you to preserve your paper's reputation and reconsider publishing articles of this nature in the future. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider our petition.

Update #19 years ago
Thank you for your support! The Washington Post has apologized for the article and removed it from its site, and at least one newspaper has dropped Will's column. Let's keep putting pressure on the Washington Post and encourage them to stop publishing this writer's anti-woman articles in the future, too!
