Ban Whale Oil as Fuel in Iceland

  • by: Animal Advocates
  • recipient: President of Iceland Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, Prime Minister Stjornarradshusinu vid Laekjartorg

Iceland's leading whaler, (Chief Executive Officer Kristjan Loftsson of whaling company, Hvalur), is fueling his whaling vessels using oil from endangered Fin whales and calls it "green biofuel".

Using whales this way is neither green, nor sustainable. The industry is motivated by profit and greed- fueling boats from dead whales, to go kill more endangered whales.

Tell Iceland there isn't anything "green" about killing endangered species. In 2010, Iceland's whalers killed 148 Endangered Fin whales, despite Iceland's propsal to hunt 80- almost twice the amount they know is sustainable. Tell the President and Prime Minister to ban the use of whales as fuel oil immediately.
