Help save the koalas of Byron Bay, Australia

  • by: Georgina B

Plans for a development in Byron Bay could wipe out hundreds of koalas and poison nearby rivers and streams, killing both birds and aquatic life.

The West Byron development would open up a 108ha site for a mix of housing and light industrial facilities. The development will destroy most of the habitat of the estimated 240 koalas in the vicinity. Developers have not instigated a management plan for the koalas – where will they go?

Furthermore, the development will be built on wetlands that contain acid sulphate soils, which can turn toxic when exposed to the air. Opponents are concerned that water discharges from the development will pollute waterways, killing fish, birds and other wildlife.

Members of the Byron Bay community are strongly opposed to the development, saying it has not been subjected to appropriate environmental studies or community consultation.

Byron Bay is famous the world over for its natural beauty, pristine beaches and wildlife. Please sign and share the petition to demand that New South Wales Planning Minister Pru Goward stop the West Byron development.
