Don't Let Polluters Regulate Themselves!

Some NC legislators are moving quickly on a proposal to remove all current members of key environmental oversight boards in our state. Senate Bill 10 would effectively fire all members of the Utilities Commission, Environmental Management Commission, Coastal Resources Commission, and Wildlife Resources Commission.

This proposal represents political shenanigans at their worst. SB10 would allow the Governor and our state legislature to immediately re-structure these commissions with new appointments, likely stacking them in a manner that essentially puts polluters and industry in charge of themselves. In fact, at least one part of SB10 would ALLOW conflicts of interest (on the Coastal Resources Commission). The Charlotte Observer writes that SB10 is "one of the more blatant power grabs in state history, and would clear the way for unchecked ideological policymaking from commissions designed to be independent and non-ideological. It gets rid of public servants before their terms end and without regard to their expertise, experience or quality of service."

Please tell your NC Representative and Governor McCrory that you oppose Senate Bill 10 and this effort to stack our state's key environmental commissions with special interest polluters.
Dear [decision-maker],

I am writing to ask you to oppose Senate Bill 10. This terrible bill would essentially fire all current members of some of the state's most important commissions. Senate Bill 10 is misguided, unnecessary, and would cause the loss of institutional memory and thoughtful transition of membership on these boards.

These boards and commissions should include a diverse set of informed members who are objective, non-partisan, and have no conflicts of interest. Please oppose Senate Bill 10.
