Arresting Protesters Before They Protest...Are we o.k. with that?

Are we still living in The United States of America? Is it still the land of the free? I'm a bit confused. Since when do we raid homes of possible protesters, before they even have a chance to protest? Is it just me...Or is there something seriously wrong with this? Here is some commentary, raw video, and news clips...Let me know what you think about all of this in comments.

From Salon.com - Massive Police Raids on Suspected Protesters In Minneapolis...

Protesters here in Minneapolis have been targeted by a series of highly intimidating, sweeping police raids across the city, involving teams of 25-30 officers in riot gear, with semi-automatic weapons drawn, entering homes of those suspected of planning protests, handcuffing and forcing them to lay on the floor, while law enforcement officers searched the homes, seizing computers, journals, and political pamphlets. Last night, members of the St. Paul police department and the Ramsey County sheriff's department handcuffed, photographed and detained dozens of people meeting at a public venue to plan a demonstration, charging them with no crime other than "fire code violations," and early this morning, the Sheriff's department sent teams of officers into at least four Minneapolis area homes where suspected protesters were staying.
. . .
There is clearly an intent on the part of law enforcement authorities here to engage in extreme and highly intimidating raids against those who are planning to protest the Convention. The DNC in Denver was the site of several quite ugly incidents where law enforcement acted on behalf of Democratic Party officials and the corporate elite that funded the Convention to keep the media and protesters from doing anything remotely off-script. But the massive and plainly excessive preemptive police raids in Minnesota are of a different order altogether. Targeting people with automatic-weapons-carrying SWAT teams and mass raids in their homes, who are suspected of nothing more than planning dissident political protests at a political convention and who have engaged in no illegal activity whatsoever, is about as redolent of the worst tactics of a police state as can be imagined.

From The New York Times - Dozens Detained Ahead of Convention

On the weekend before the Republican National Convention, law enforcement agencies detained dozens of people and issued a series of search warrants aimed at groups believed to be organizing demonstrations while delegates and Republican officials are in town.

Video of journalist, Amy Goodman being arrested at the Republican National Convention...

A post on the Minnesota Independent has a link to ColdSnapLegal's invaluable twitter, which shows a detailed breakdown of prior incidents involving police and protesters that have been happening throughout the day. The twitter shows a report of Democracy Now! journalists being arrested and includes Amy Goodman.

Here are some more videos clips...

To everybody who responded to my post:
It's nice to know we're all on the same page & that some of us have solutions to what ails us.
I am a member of Care 2 & Credo that signs petitions too. (I also work with a handful of others online now only.)
Hey, thanks for the star & butterflies!

THAT'S WHY WE NEED ACTION. FOR THE SMART KNWLEGABLE PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON TO TELL THEIR NEIGHBORS IN THEIR PRECINCT ABOUT WWW.CAMPAIGNFORLIBERTY.ORG THIS IS ONE OF THE LINES OF DEFENSE AGAINST THIS ABUSE OF AUTHORITY AND GARAUNTEED CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.

There is a point a line that is crossed, and it was crossed in 2000 when bush and the Supreme Court Coup appointed him.

Now, today, things are well beyond the point of normalcy, democracy, and acceptability by realistically critically thinking people.

We need to go into the streets. Break out of our pleasure bubble and stop the corruption of our world. Economically bankers like Mr. Potter in "It's a Beautiful Life" run the world. Politically, politicians are bought and are victimized or victimizing others so that "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" looks like a PTA meeting.

We don't have a democracy. We live in a dysfunctional Plutocracy. We need to take back our country and amend the constitution so there is a separation of Corporate and State.

NOW!

I share the disgust at these actions but we must keep things in perspective. You people are forgetting we live in the United States of Stupid! These police are merely enforcing the will of the morons. If you want to blame someone just watch your neighbors as they rush home so as not to miss "Dancing with the Stars". We should change our national symbol from an eagle to an ostrich, with its head buried in the dirt and its ass in the air!

where were all you people when Ron Paul was running in the primaries, we needed you to be elected so that the power brokers had no support and would not be able to get the positions of power. We need you now. we need you tomorrow. Join Ron Paul's "Campaign For Liberty" regardless what political affiliation you may be. So that we will all regain the liberties, peace and prosperity that we used to have.

This is just one more example of the "Big Brother" mentality of the Bush Administration and their continuous play of the fear card. The Republicans pushed the lack of privacy issue and we are in danger of losing all our rights to fear. Personally, I am more afraid of the loss of rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights than I am of terrorists attacking our country again. While I think that further attacks are possible, I do not think that the citizens of this country should compromise in any way the rights we are seeing eroding. The police need to answer the question: "What right did you have to enter private citizens homes without cause?"

I have to watch Free Speech TV to find out about the extent of the crackdown, and why isn't the media showing at least the hundreds of veterans expressing their views about this charade, and all the other groups who are outside protesting peacefully? The pre-emptive detentions and arrests of journalists is inexcusable. And the media blackout even more. We need Care2 and Credo and every possible outlet for exposing this horrendous attack on civil liberties.
