Blog Reactions to Obama's National Security Team

There has been a lot of talk in the blogosphere about Obama's choices for his National Security Team. Here is a small sample.

"A Progressive Case for Gates" - Maz Bergmann, Huffington Post

The appointment of Secretary Gates is sure to irk many progressives - and for good reason. Gates was a part of the Bush administration, he oversaw the implementation of the President's "surge" strategy, and has supported missile defense...[but] Gates has advocated some very bold progressive reforms during the last couple of years. He has broken with the Rumsfeld emphasis on military transformation and has repeatedly talked about the need for the Pentagon to move away from procuring unnecessary weapons that are hugely expensive and have little strategic role...

Gates, as a Republican holdover in a Democratic administration, has an aura of bi-partisanship that makes him much more difficult to attack.

"Friends Close...Enemies Closer...Part II" - James C. Collier, Acting White

From Hillary's view, returning to the Senate puts her in the company of other senate long-shot losers, Kerry for one, and is not going to get her any closer to the White House (if she gets another chance). The high-profile Sec. State job keeps her in the thick of things, recognizes her skill set, and gives potential and significant accomplishments to put on her resume. It's also a good place to shine, separate from any stumble Obama might make on the home-front.

From Obama's view, it is more difficult for her to undermine him, if she is on the team with her hands full negotiating around the world. Also, any meddling she might attempt will be more obvious than if she is in the senate, looking out for her constituents on issues of domestic interest. All in all, I think it's a good trade.

"5 Things the War Cabinet Says About Obama" - Jim Vandehi and Mike Allen, Politico

He is willing to take risks...

Hillary Clinton could be a fabulous world diplomat, considering her familiarity with leaders and global problems. She could also be a disaster if the Clinton family's penchant for personal and political dramas distract the Obama presidency. Gates could be the perfect man to end the Iraq war: A Bush appointee with strong ties to the GOP establishment. Or he could clash with the new, outsized personalities around him. And don't forget: Joe Biden is vice president and deference isn't his specialty.

...It is clear now the "change" Obama will bring to Washington will center around his personal style and values, not the cast of characters by his side.

"It's Not Hillary, It's the Policy, Stupid!" - Tom Andrews and Lt. Gen. Robert G. Gard, Jr., Huffington Post

Those of us eagerly awaiting relief from the debacle called the Bush administration should avoid getting swept up the in DC parlor game of who is getting what position in the new administration and focus instead on the fundamental changes we need the Obama administration to start making. In short, "It's the Policy Stupid!"

It is a wonderful thing for We The People openly discussing our views on these appointments, How very different from the secretive insanities of the bushites.

Gates was not appointed he was allowed to remain in his position but could be replaced at any time down the line .I think the reason Obama has not replaced Gates is because we are still in two wars and he most likely wants to get a better fix on where those wars are going and what should be done .I would say he will probably replace Gates either in a couple of years or in Obama's next term ,"as I am pretty sure he will be an 8 year president !
